12. I thought his thighs were a little fat.
And you know he doesn't like you know who and in the hallway after cheerleading, he said to that other guy that the girl he liked was going out with somebody else and he like totally went off on her and "how dare you" this and that and then old Mrs. Favermyer, the gym teacher, came out and totally busted everybody for being all loud and stuff even though it was lunch period and they were allowed to be a little noisy, but anyway, Barack says this thing that, like, really PO'ed, like everybody. But his shirt was cute and stuff.

It was AWEsome.

It may not be up yet, but keep checking. Don't have time at the moment to "transcript" it. You'll know it when you hear it, or maybe someone else will do the honors (essentially, he said, stop whining and get to work).

Oh, and I actually did mean "applied." What he said "applied" to DU'ers -- not "implied" to DU'ers. :)

Lastly, you may have mistaken me for someone (or something else) BUT WE ARE ON THE SAME SIDE. Longtime DU'er here since 2004.

33. He didn't even mention the public option but demand we all "unite!" around whatever's going down.
He mentioned several points we Dems should be happy about and "uniting" about: eliminating the denial of consumers with previous conditions, the possibility of co-ops, etc. but never mentions the public option.

I have to admit, this sounded a lot like one of his campaign speeches. It was great. But the details make me crazy right now so when he misses on making the key points like strongly advocating for a public option (that would really light my "fiya"), I'm bummed these days.

He has such a bully pulpit. Use it dammit.

I really question whether he really wants it. He's beginning to just look like a weak President to me. I'm disappointed. Oh well. I would like to be proven wrong, But we're this late in the game and we're still seeing him take a weak stance on the issue. The quotes from Rahm, Jarrett, and Axe over the weekend opened my eyes.

were dashed by the appointmen t of Rahm. Geithner and Summers confirmed my aprehensions. I really didn't expect much but I didn't expect the appointment of Arme and the dissing of the AEA as well as the Golman Sachs influence. If we get a solid PO, it will be because of the unions, who were also dissed.

70. personally i think he's holding it back
for when it will really matter.

both the right and the left have yelled themselves hoarse accusing him of this or that. Which is great, (well great on your part, i don't like the right very much) because you're passionate, and don't stop doing that, but I as I think we've seen his modus operandi, we can understand that he waits till the time is right for his big push.

I don't believe in that whole multi-dimensional chess crap, but I do think that this is how he prefers to operate. Everyone can rush into the area, beat each other over the head with calls of racism, reverse racimes, etc, etc, and then he'll come in and act like the wise adult. He's already set the terms of the debate, he kept the terms broad so that everyone would feel like they could have a say (of course there will always be crazies who think the status quo is fine, and everyone's just a-ok). No-one (other than Glen Beck and his children of the night) feels like, or can yell that they have been marginalised by this administration on the debate.

It seems like he's trusted the democratic majorities to see him through to a certain point, from which it will be a lot easier for him to push through to the end. If he had pushed from the start, things would have hardened around him a lot quicker.

Just my take on it.

62. "Choice" and "competition" are vague terms
Sorry but they are.

We're in the end stages of a political battle and we're still getting vagueness without the WH defining specifics.

"Public Option" has many possible interpretations from co-ops to Medicare for all.

I don't understand DUers who don't "get" that some of us are worried about the specifics at this point in the game. It's too loose. It's too ambivalent. I feel as though more leadership from Obama on the specifics could sway the results. Let me go further, Obama and his team know precisely how to persuade recalicitrant Dems to go along on this. Chicago politics are notorious for hardball and (Axelrod in particular) his aides are all Chicago expertise. Knee cap these guys. Shit, Axelrod and Emmanual got the confidential divorce files of Obama's opponent out via a FOIA request for Obama's Senate win (for example). They understand threats about funding, political support, covert psy-ops and all the rest. Rove learned from THESE guys how to win. But their not doing it.

Obama's public coyness on HCR smells.

Sorry but it does.

Seriously? You want them to "knee cap" a health care bill?

Explain to me why the President has to publicly strong arm members of Congress in order to convince us he's taking a leadership position? Are we like the baby playing the proverbial game with the blanket? If we cant see it, then it doesn't exist?

101. I never said the President had to strong arm members of Congress
That's his aides job.

And yes, I do believe that the time is now to be the enforcer for this bill in order for Obama to get a public option.

FWIW, my "knee-cap" reference was not to a health care bill, it was a figurative reference to how Obama's aides have worked in the past. They've been pretty viscious and without concern for the wreckage left in their path. From trampling a pretty high level activist in his first run in 1996 to the FOIA request on Jack Ryan's confidential divorce records during his Senate campaign, they've never shown mercy.

That's how his operatives have always worked. It's tough politics but it's gotten Obama to this point. And now they're suddenly all solicitous? Why? Chicago politics are all about these maneuvers and I'm not upset that he and his advisors did what he had to do in order to get elected in this town but if that's always been your modus operandi, and suddenly it's changed, I believe it's legitimate to question why. Especially as we near the end zone and the game has intensified.

38. I'm not full of hate, I'm full of fear. And yes, I really hope he is shouting about the PO daily.
My husband is about to hit his maximum benefits on our life insurance policy. Decades of faithfully paying BCBS but WHEN he relapses (a certainty since it's not curable), we have about $250k left on the policy to take care of a stem cell transplant (that has a 100% cure rate so far for lymphoma) that will cost over a $1 million.

We'll be bankrupt.

Taking our small biz (which employs 12) and everything we've worked for 25 years, down the rabbit hole.

So yes, forgive me if I sound frantic about this. I am.

Not a hater. Just freaked out.

I do not "hate" Obama but I am not impressed with him either. I did vote for him as the lesser of two evils. I would never have voted for McCain. I would vote for Obama again against Mccain. But I am not impressed with how Obama has handled HCR and his bipartisanship above all approach. It would be wonderful to have a Democratic president who came out "swinging" in support of the people. Just why do you think so many of our allies are angry? Like the unions? Because they don't feel support from the President.

I guess because you choose to nitpick and don't see the word DEMAND in there it's not so. But if you read his words thats exactly what he's doing.

So continue to pick over every little word or non-word and I'll continue to take all the words together to get their meaning.

50. Can I just respectfully add that yes, he does need to say it a million times?
Bush encapsulated it beautifully, "catapult the propaganda".

True then. True now.

Obama's no neophyte. I assume he knows Chicago politics (or his team does). Someone goes to the Senator and quietly tells him that if he doesn't vote the "right way", he loses Obama. Especially since Obama has made this his 'signature issue". That means Obama campaigns for his rival. That means Obama throws support and money to his rival. That means the powerful machine revs up against that guy.

There's more to it than that but in Chicago that means knee-capping. Figuring out FOIA requests to ensure opening up sordid divorce files of your opponents to expose them as abusive (which Obama did) and worse.

You think we're dealing with adults?! Snort! Thugs. Obama's team knows what to do. They need Obama out there as the mouthpiece.

And he's not doing it. Why? And it's worrisome that he's not. Daily.

102. I've already said upthread that Obama did what any Chicago politician would do
and I have no problem with that.

It's the way the game is played. Hardball, bloody and yes involves kneecapping your opponents so they understand the depth of your ruthlessness to win the game (like Alice Palmer who vastly underestimated him).

That's why it's so perplexing that he's not using every technique available to him in order to get this deal done on healthcare reform, with a public option. He knows how to be ruthless, and he knows how to maneuver people to get them to do what he wants. He knows how to be nice and brutal.

It's time to make sure the rest of Congress knows that Obama is a Chicago politician with all the skills that accompany that "title". Personally I don't think it has to be an epithet. It can be. But it doesn't have to be.

45. I have to respond. I live in IL. I've been in on the ground floor of "Team Obama"
since the early days. I've believed in the guy for a long time.

He is purposefully choosing to be coy on HCR imho. Clearly he's not coming out swinging. I appreciate your enthusiasm but "knowing" him, this is obviously his tactic - to let Congress lead, to let bi-partisanship flower (if possible), to get the major industries on board (again, if possible) - to speak as generally as he can so he doesn't alienate a boatload of $$$.

That's cool.

For the initial stages of deal making (if you are going to go that route). We're in the end game. This is the "closer". Now's the time for pressure.

Obama is purposefully choosing to NOT apply the pressure. Daily. That is very worrisome at this point imho.

53. At least half of my "Obama team" is so disillusioned, they're out for 2012.
Said so last week at a meet-up.

Afghanistan, DADT (and all the rest! from support of DOMA to Rick Warren), wiretapping, HCR, bank bailouts to Geithner and Summers etc. etc.

He's losing a slew of good people. Good progressive Dems. They won't vote Rethug but they won't be back for Obama. I'm very worried for Obama. He's alienating a huge segment o f people who have been with him from the beginning.

My team checked out too. They won't necessarily vote against Dems, but they have just lost heart about the point of being involved. Two are leaving the country. Obama will have a very hard time putting together the fire and manpower that he had for last fall. I've been at this for forty years, and I don't feel like I've got the stomach to give what it takes again only to be let down .... again.

71. To you and
the rest of those who aren't happy with Obama because he hasn't kissed your asses, I say good luck in 2012 with Palin or whomever runs from the right because hey, I'm sure you'll get everything you want from one of them and not just the little bits of "crumbs" you all so proudly proclaim Obama is giving you.

And hey, maybe, just maybe, enough Republicans will win the Congress back and that way those 5 million kids who are now insured through SCHIP will once again be without.

Or how about those women now receiving equal pay for equal work, won't they be thrilled to have that taken away from them.

And to hell with stem cell research right? Those with hope now really don't need it right?

I'll say it again, my side has become a party of whiners who want it all their way or no fucking way at all.

Barack Obama walked into a hell hole and is doing the best he can without the help of Congress yet here all the whiney asses are talking about how they won't work for him in 2012 blah blah blah.

Pathetic.

105. What you don't know
about me and what I have done to get Obama into office and to help put as many Democrats in office as possible over the last 40 years would clog the servers.

Just jump and cheer. Then blame anyone but yourself when everything hits the fan. Acolytes like you who call those of us who have worked for the party for decades republicans only do Obama harm. By wrapping yourself in what you think is his special place, you nauseate those who actually do the work of the party. Over and over last fall as I went from door to door for the party, I heard people say that they could support Obama, but couldn't stand the rabid newbies who knew nothing of politics or issues, but just knew that Obama was the most wondermus and specialest candidate ever. They had a hard time getting the crazies out of their mind when they had to think about Obama. I get your signal when you talk about being "turned on" to Obama. Part time liberals and band wagon supporters. I would see you at the rallies but not at the work sessions and on the list of volunteers who did the real work away from the band and the lime light.

I don't mind being called a purist by someone who thinks that a purist is anyone with a moral or political center, someone who actually has ideals and beliefs.

89. Talk about tone deaf.
I guess you don't care whether Obama can get re-elected. You just want your private little club of hangers on and suck-ups. That would make you so special.

When it comes to his getting legislation passed, you love to tell people about the real world and how this is the way things work. Then when you are informed that the president's actions are tuning off his most useful base (mindless rah rah posse doesn't count because they turn off more people than they attract) you want us to just go away.

What I'm telling you is that all those things you want won't happen after 2012 if the administration keep on doing what it's doing. You are the one who doesn't care if some mccain/palin clone pair take over. You are the ones closing your eyes to what is really happening. So go ahead and keep those stars in your eyes. Go ahead and shun those that aren't sufficiently full of unconditional praise. That is the surest way to a republican administration in 2013.

But of course you won't mind, You will be one of the special people. So you can take your nasty mouth and selfish sense of self worth and hide from reality.

Yes. You are pathetic.

100. Calling it a meme doesn't make it so.
I made one of those calls too. I will call a few of those that worked the last campaign with me. My feeling is that they too made a call.

Trying to get legislation passed is not the same as being excited about a candidate. It is not just the base that is losing heart. I had twice as many eager young workers during last Fall's election campaign as I had ever had, even for Clinton. That is the group that is disappointed. They went to the houses and told people we would have universal coverage and that we would get "our boys" home and that we were going to end the lobby and backroom dealings from the White House, and a host of other things that seem less important to the administration now than it did when there was an election.

Drip. Drip. Drip.
