I am teaching a unit on the 3 branches of Government |
|
This is an 8th grade class so we do not get very deep into any area, just the basics.
Things like:
What is the job for each branch Who is in each branch
Qualifications of office
things like that.
We talked about Secret Service and other things.
My students want to write a letter to President Obama and invite him to our school.
I think it is a great idea 139 students would be writing.
Any suggestions on ideas? Remember, these are 8th graders...predominately minority and many not even legal.
Please if you don't like my grammar or punctuation or anything like that, keep it to yourself. This is a thought not a letter to congress.

I guess I might put it to an anonymous ballot vote, so that when the freeper kid (if there is one or two) dissents, they can learn about majority rule by democratic vote. Also make it very clear that the kids can write whatever they want, so the freeper kid can write whatever--as long as it's respectful, right? But just given the times, I'd suggest you CYA a bit on this project.
Otherwise: wonderful idea! My son was teaching in mostly immigrant city school a couple years ago and told his kids the president of the US is actually pretty accessible. They totally didn't believe him, but he was able to produce a photo of me (his mother) and a president (the one time I met one, sadly, it was f'ing chimpboy :grr:). Anyway, he said the mere idea that someone they knew knew someone who had met a US president really made an impression and helped him help them to form the first student government association in the school. I see only good things coming out of this project for your kids! :hi:

6. Why aren't they legal? |
|
"predominately minority and many not even legal."
How can a person not be legal?
And if they are predominate? Isn't predominate a synonym of majority?
