110. Before anyone reads further - know that this is a fake
The photo has been shown to be a staged event. The father has done this numerous times before. The "attacker" in the union shirt is apparently the son of the father and older brother to the little girl. He's not in a painters union - he's an intelligence specialist in the National Guard. See other threads on this issue.

Don't be taken in.

2. you mean parents raising freeper children?
you're right, we don't.

it's sad.

i feel more sorry for the little girl who's being brought up as a freeper than i do her sign was torn up.

her father should've known better than to take her in the midst of a kerry-edwards campaign stop.

if he wants to interrupt a stop like that, leave the little girl at home.

25. On the off chance her sign would get trashed
Then her sad, little tear-stained face and Daddy's shocked and upset expression would be caught by a photographer for the next day's paper -- as well as for posterity -- as living proof as to what heartless bastards these Kerry supporters are. That's why they get there really early to get front and center.

The kid probably has no idea who George Bush or John Kerry are. She's just there so Dad can make a point, whatever it is.

Having seen kids at rallies like this, I consider it to be a mild form of child abuse. Using anyone -- especially kids -- in this way is not "cute."

While I don't condone the ripped sign, what did the man expect by showing up at the opposition's event? And how else was he and the kid antagonizing those around them?

16. Interesting
The women in the backround, wearing Kerry shirts, look horrified.

The man laughing and holding the remnants of the sign appears to be wearing a union shirt. There have been some other incidents in which union-shirt wearing men have been photographed bothering Bush supporters, while Kerry supporters look on in surprise and shock.

So interesting that the assailants are always wearing shirts with large union identifications, and photographers are always right there to capture the moment.

I'm not SAYING that freepers dressed up in union shirts might be deliberately attacking other people holding Bush signs while photographers happen to be pointing their cameras, but some people say....

35. There is some truth to this, but...
I was at an anti-Cheney rally that had a large contingent of union members. They were definitely not freepers, but they did do some things that were a little over the top -- but nothing malicious.

An elderly Bush supporter kept coming over to the crowd and taunting us. We tried to engage him in some dialogue, and then ignore him, but he kept up to the point of getting right in the faces of some of these union guys who have been out of work for months. Something was said, and the old man lunged toward one of the pipefitters. Naturally, the pipefitter pushed back -- guess which image made the evening news?

Later I found out that this old man had to be physically removed from Kerry HQ premises for harrassing the staff. But what image do you think remains with the public? Right -- the big, bad union dude picking on the senior citizen.

41. Hell, I knew what they were too
Just took me a minute to figure out freeper, and a poster at Free Republic, were the same thing.

Anyone who went to check out Jerome Corsi after the "Unfit for Command" book came out and the quotes from Corsi surfaced knows about Free Republic.

Sadly, sometimes I'm looking at their mirror image here. Rather like when I hung with the atheists as their token theist, and watch them be as extreme as their born-again counterparts.

Dang, people. Be reasonable. Even I squeezed out a few tears for Nancy when Ron died, mostly because it reminded me of my dad. John Kerry himself stopped campaigning for a week and went to pay his respects.

And one of the most staunch Repubs I know said that politics shouldn't stand in the way of human feeling. He'd feel bad if Clinton died, even if he doesn't personally support the guy. We still have a shared humanity. Let's not lose it. Don't destroy your village to save it.

Not all Bushies are Freepers. They're not that informed, alot of them. They still think Bush is a traditional Repub who likes small government, and that you support a prez in wartime, no matter how fubar it is.

That said, one thing I found odd in the story was how they said Kerry supporters (plural) ripped up the sign. How many people does it take to rip up a sign. And once again, we don't know the full story. How belligerant was the guy before the incident. Was the girl crying because of the sign, or because a bunch of people were yelling all around her.

I agree, dad shouldn't have brought the kid, and probably did it because it made a more poignant portrait, politically speaking.

Obviously, he doesn't have a clue and can't read the writting on the ballot ... four times! His last attempt in 2004 shows him getting his ass whooped but good! Huntington is an education town. There is not much there but Marshall University. He is in real estate and I would bet, fairly frustrated as the last time I was there there were lots of properties for sale, but few buyers. Perhaps the market is better now, but I doubt it.

His last election returns are listed here.

I want to be able to assess for myself whether this story is authentic.

Maybe we can get Rep. Blount to widen his investigation to include this brewing controversy.

62. What they should have done was give her a bright, shiny Kerry/Edwards sign
without her freeper/exploiting/asshat dad knowing about it.

Big smile, "Here, would you like another pretty sign?"

This was obviously a setup, and because there are assholes on both sides, one of them obliged and gave Rove a little bon bon.

70. Not that it really matters much I guess
I'm fairly new here & I'm pretty sure my opinion doesn't count for much here yet. Come to think of it, maybe that's the reason I'm willing to say this: Y'all are acting like fucking assholes!

I took my 4-year-old daughter to her first political rally this summer -- Kerry in Sioux City, Iowa. I'll never forget how excited she was when, as she sat on my husband's shoulders, someone handed her a sign. She still has it thumbtacked to the wall in her bedroom. Since then our family has attended rallies and protests as well.

Children don't understand Rove or Bush or Kerry or politics. The only thing that little girl knows is that someone pulled something she liked from her hands and ruined it. How dare they! How dare any of you even remotely try to defend this.

Tonight you've acted no better than the scum bag FReepers -- hope you're happy.

76. Read all the posts and figure out what went on.
Her father was the only asshole. This was an obvious setup. It's hard to say what else this asshole might have done to trigger this. You didn't take your daughter into the other camp looking for a photo-op and trouble, there is a big difference.

78. I've been taking my children to rallies over the past two years...
However, I would *never* take them to a Bush rally and put them in harm's way for my own satisfaction. That is selfish and irresponsible. I do not condone what the person who tore up the sign did, but I think the father should explain why it was necessary to put his 3 year old daughter in that situation in the first place.

95. I don't condone picking on children, but I'm not sure what really happened
right before this photo was snapped. First, it was poor judgment for a father to bring a tiny child to a Kerry rally and give her a Bush sign to hold. He knew it might attract trouble. He put her in harm's way.

Second, I've started to notice how many of these incidents involve people who don't seem to be real Kerry supporters. I suspect they may be plants, there to cause trouble and make Kerry supporters look bad.

Third, this man is no newcomer to politics. He's followed Bush all over the country this year, taking his ten children with him. He's run for his local school board four times. He's not naive. He knew what he was doing.

why would a mom put a kerry sticker on her car. and send her children to a school of fundamentalist that say all public kids are ungodly and are going ot hell. and have sons in a boyscouts where they are ostracized and feeling left out. where a father walks into parking lot of school and sees the kerry sticker, takes a second and third look and shuffles kid away in anger as if the devil himself was standing in front of him

who cares why that man took the little girl to the airport. how dare that person take the cheney sign and rip it up. how dare he stand there with tht ugly smile

BTW, sorry about calling everyone assholes... it's just that if we are going to be the folks who stand up for freedom of speech, we also need to be the folks who tolerate the speech we don't particularly like.

What the guy did to the little girl was wrong -- he should have been the bigger man and walked away from the situation.

86. just another
girlie-man for bush :eyes:

Ya know, when I took my kids to rallies, I actually took them to rallies where I knew they would hear good things about the candidates I wanted them to learn more about - to see people excited about the political process and excited about having an impact.

Do we even know if that's the real dad? Have there been DNA tests done? Where is the birth certificate? Because any REAL DAD that I know would never deliberately endanger his own child in that way - taking her to a place where crowds can become overly zealous, and accidents can happen. Deliberately stirring up a hornet's nest, and hiding under the skirt of a child. MAN, these people suck.

100. How it all came down at JUST the right moment: a set-up, as
clear as day. I'll summarize: Daddy's done this before, the "Union" guy is Parlock (daddy's) son, the girl is "Union" guys brother, the photographer and reporter have been at nearly every other one of the incidences.

Karl Rove, you really have lost your touch--way too easy.

Damn, DUers, you're good! Read through the posts though it's time consuming, LOADS of information in even the smallest posts.
