GOP plans Iowa blitz

.
The nation’s attention will be on Iowa’s Democratic caucuses in about 10 days, but a platoon of prominent Republicans will also flood the state that day.
.
A lineup of a dozen ranking Republicans will land in the state Jan. 19 to visit GOP caucus sites across the state, talking with supporters of President Bush and no doubt spreading an alternative view to the Democratic message.
.
For the past year, with the spotlight on Democrats seeking the party’s 2004 presidential nomination, Republicans and their allies have sought to counter their criticism with a response team of their own. But this influx of Republicans will be their greatest attempt so far to steer the political dialogue. President Bush has no opposition for the GOP nomination.
.
Among the Republicans who will be in Iowa that day: former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Marc Racicot, the chairman of the president’s re-election committee; Ken Mehlman, his campaign manager; Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.; U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa.; House Majority Leader Tom Delay, R-Texas; and Mary Matalin, an adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney.
