Dean supporters: Are you comfortable
with deans advisors not letting dean be himself?

In a recent interview dean told a reporter "He was not allowed" to answer certain questions.

Is this the Howard Dean you supported from the beginning? The one that said the things he said that made you proud to be a dean supporter?

I don't like dean, (I did at one time)....but I did like his fire.....If his fire was what brought me into his camp, having that fire deminished by his advisors with the approval of dean himself, would make me question the realness of deans fire at all.

IMO, he's being transformed into al gore II, I loved gore, but he really was boring and dean was not al gore when he started this, It'd be a shame to make him al gore now.

This is not a slam on dean (I know a lot of you won't believe it but), I just find it odd that supporters here that have been fired up by dean's fire, are now OK with the new silenced dean. If your comfortable with the new dean, I wonder what all the fire talk was about. I'm just trying to understand why!

And then there were none!

1. "I'm not allowed to...."
still has a candor that many politicos lack.

If you have to do it -- and we understand that you do -- at least don't try to pretend you're being spontaneous.

2. His normal persona is a smartypants know-it-all doctor
Like a lot of doctors I've met, including ones in my own family, whose self-perceptions often exceed their real capabilities. I support Dean because of his stated positions on many issues but I do have some anxiety about who I believe the real Howard Dean thinks he is.

Never forget, no matter who the real Howard Dean may be he's not George W. Bush.

9. I will vote for dean
if given the nod, I just find it strange he would openly admit that he was not allowed to say something, and was wondering if his supporters were OK with this.

Personally, if I were a supporter, I would be voicing my disappointment to his campaign, but then again, I would comfortable with my candidate saying he's not allowed to be himself.

I know all candidates are prepped on talking points, but to have an adviser present with the purpose of stifling your comments, to me comes off as not being genuine.

And then there were none!

3. All this is is a realization
that the other campaigns are lurking for any misstatements. As Dean has said, he tends to speak elliptically - not always saying all the words he is thinking, which causes problems when used as a direct quote.

Also he knows he tends to ad lib and go off script, a dangerous thing in a tight election as it increases the chances of a misstatement.

The fact Dean is openly joking about it tells me all that is occurring is he has directed his staff to help him avoid backing himself into rhetorical corners. It is a smart move to know what your achille's heel is and attempt to protect it.

4. Oh, Dean will be Dean
He won't be crying, "Help, Mary!!" or hiding behind DLCers to run his campaign.

5. Sure, because I'm intelligent
I feel fine. Dean can still be himself, and he will be. More NONSENSE.

7. I think Dean was just making a funny.
Frankly, I don't think Dean CAN be handled.

In the end he's very much his own man.

11. This is true
everybody pounces on a statement - without realizing he may have been saying it in a half-joking way. Still - there is some truth to the strategy - every word coming out of the man's mouth is being twisted and used againsthim in some way. They have to figure out a way to deal with that. If it means limiting his press exposure - perhaps that is wise in the short term.

Never forget, Bush NEVER faces the press unless it is scripted. Now we have a guy willing to say what he thinks - he may say it in an elliptical way - assuming people will be smart enough to fill in the blanks - but he gets crucified for everything that comes out of his mouth.

14. God forbid!
The lack of mental wherewithal from Dean opponents here is staggering.

15. In the interview
he was asked about his tax plan, at first dean said he'd be happy to talk about it, then after given a "look" from an adviser, he said he wasn't "allowed" to and wouldn't. To me that was not "just making a funny" Did I miss something?

10. It's the OTHER candidates who are afraid
Everyone attacks Dean because they know he will get the nomination. He's the best man for the job. Once he gets the nod, everybody will fall in line. Watch.
