At the debates Kerry needs to explain his vote on Iraq in a simple, straight-forward way. This is what I think he should say. I believe it includes the one sentence sound bite the media needs and continues with a clear explanation via analogy.
I voted to give the president of the United States a loaded gun, but it was George Bush who choose to pull the trigger. We had Sadam Hussein right where we wanted him, with his hands over his head while Bush held the gun and the weapon inspectors patted him down looking for arms. It was a great victory for diplomacy backed by force, a philosophy I still stand behind. But then Bush did something quite reckless, something I've always disagreed with. Though the weapon inspectors had not finished their work and had not found any weapons, Bush told them to step aside; then he fired.
From there Kerry can go on about the mess in Iraq, perhaps tossing in a line about Bush shooting himself in the foot.
I'm not the first to come up with this analogy, of course, but wanted to push it in the hopes it reaches Kerry. I really think this is the best way to explain to the people what Kerry has tried to explain for the last couple of years.

We gave Bush a loaded gun to protect, if necessary, the homeland from an imminent threat. Bush took that loaded gun and went out and shot the neighbors dog for barking.
Oh, and WELCOME!!

3. Technically it is a metaphor not an analogy |
|
but it is on target nonetheless. (pun intended)

Not that analogy and metaphor are exactly opposites, but metaphor is better. Also, Saddam has two d's; whatcha ganna do? :-)

4. I always like a gun reference myself. |

But it is a matter of taste... and how it is received.
