Clark Counters Dean Flyer With His Own
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 04:21 PM by cryingshame
Moderators- there are about 7 sentences posted here. Article didn't use paragraphs.

CONCORD, Jan. 8

snip

Gen. Wesley Clark's campaign handed out a flier at a "Conversations with Clark" event Thursday criticizing Gov. Howard Dean for circulating negative information about Clark earlier this week.

Clark's leaflet lists positive quotes about himself attributed to Dean and U.S. Sens. John Kerry & Joseph Lieberman.

"Howard Dean's campaign is circulating negative literature about Wes Clark, filled with inaccuracies and half-truths," the flier begins. "That's not leadership and that's not integrity, that's just politics as usual."

Dean campaign spokesman Matthew Gardner previously confirmed that Dean volunteers were at Clark events Tuesday and Wednesday distributing information about the ret.- general.

.... Clark told reporters he was not surprised by the distribution of the negative literature.

"I guess that's what professional politicians do," Clark said, "I'm not a politician.... It's the first election I've ever run, and I just want to communicate with the voters."

37. Clark lies again, people yawn...
Clark loudly proclaimed he wasn't going to go negative and said that's what professional politicians do, putting homself above that. Now he attacks the "leadership" and "integrity" of another candidate. It's fine for him to go negative but he shouldn't have lied and said he wasn't going to, earlier.

4. Pretty savvy response
Hands out flyers at his own event with positive statements about himself. Clark fights back while emphasizing a positive message. His line that he's not a professional politician is pretty astute.

Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 04:19 PM by returnable
After Shelton lobbed the "integrity and character" bomb, the campaign responded by issuing a thick volume of praise for Clark, including comments from top military brass like Shelton.

Genius. Absolutely genius. Diffuses the smear without engaging in the mindset. :toast:

Didn't someone here on DU suggest that Clark do exactly what he has done with these flyers? I thought I read a post where someone suggested Clark use Dean's own positive statements against Dean himself?

I like this. Clark's a stand up guy.

Did anyone see the footage where Dean stood on risers when he was being introduced by Bradley? I thought that was hilarious -- kind of pathetic when you think about.

It looked to me like Dean was playing to it. The press was being dense. I mean, nobody would have to see the platform he was standing on to know Dean's not as tall as Bradley. :eyes: Yet they made such a thing out of it. Stupid.

24. If Clark wants to communicate with voters...why not debate?
This Sunday he's skipping the 3rd debate of the year.

The only candidate who has skipped all 3.

I seriously doubt the "communicate" comments...pure politics.

26. No skills
Clark doesn't debate because he falls on his face at the very few he has participated in! Clark is a solid candidate on paper, but even he would lose Bush in a debate -- that's saying something.

He will have a tough time convincing anyone that Bush is so terrible when they have him on tape kissing up to the President and his ENTIRE administration.

32. What a difference from the political BS
Clark is what we need, a candidate with class. This alone puts him head and shoulders above dean in the department of honor and integrity.

It's a shame dean will never know what it's like to be respected by thousands, he's just another politician and no better than the others.

Dean makes me sick, and if by chance he does get the nod, it'll prove to me that America wants what they already have and I'm done with it all.

And then there were none!

35. Question regarding flyers....
Is there some unwritten rule that campaigns can't hand out flyers or something? We accept the fact that candidates disagree with their opponents during debates, we accept that candidates point out the differences between themselves and their opponents in TV ads, and we accept the fact that campaigns discuss these differences on the radio and the Internet and sometimes in editorials.

Why are flyers worse than the others?

What does the Clark flyer say?

What does the Dean flyer say?

Are campaigns not allowed to use negative literature even if everything on it is true?

39. Is there some unwritten rule
that says that candidates can't respond to sleazy smear flyers distributed by opponents at their own events? And if everything in Dean's flyers was true then why did Dean spend so much time consulting with Clark and say such nice things about him before he entered the race. What does this say about Dean's judgement? Hmmmmm...
