The credibility of the media is at stake....
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 08:52 AM by kentuck
whether they know it or not. There are those that say they have no "credibility" already. That may true but it has never been focused on them before. People will be watching and monitoring the media very closely this time around. They have proven themselves incapable of accurately reporting almost anything about this election. Where are we headed when we lose our independent press?

1. With few exceptions there is no
independent press. What we have is a corporate media that bases its "reporting" on what stories and what spin can generate the most money and profit. Only a handful of them have expressed disgust at the way the media has gone. As for the rest of them, I don't really think they care about credibility as long as they keep making money.

3. I am sorry. the media has already sold their credibility.
When they didn't question the voting process in Florida (2000)
When they didn't question the 7 minutes when shrub sat there while under attack.
When they didn't question the IRAQ war before we attacked.
When they didn't question his military service.
When they didn't question his flip-flopping reasons for IRAQ
When they didn't question his politicizing 9/11.
When they don't question the electronic voting fraud possibilities
When they removed reporters who dare ask tough questions.

The media has been a gop whore all along.

4. I am bothered by Charles Gibson
being a moderator. His interview with Kerry last spring about his medals was disgusting and orchestrated by Karen Hughes and Gibson. I don't trust that jerk. If he pulls that crap again, Gibson should be asked why he never served, since he is the same age as Kerry. I don't know how Gibson can be a moderator at a debate when he is so clearly in Roves pocket.

5. The news is broken
Only when it becomes economically necessary for the press to do their jobs will it happen. When a market for "liberal" news is seen as financial lucrative, you'll start seeing "liberal" stations (it’s happening with AirAmerica Radio).

The problem with that of course, is that is further polarizes things.

I hope the pendulum swings back to actually fair and actually balanced reporting. How long will that take? And what will it take? I think the discussions here are step in the direction of fixing things.

7. You are absolutely correct. But it has never bothered these creeps
before. They may be all pretty boys and girls but they are as deadly to democracy as the old Soviet press or the propaganda teams working with Hitler. They are all hair and teeth and no integrity nor soul. THEY are the enemy.

8. Bring back Thomas Jefferson
He's the one that said "I would rather have newspapers without a government than a government without newspapers."

He's maybe that's why they've been sliming him over the last couple years about his sexual relationship with one of his slaves!

Anyway, check out a web site called www.tbrnews.org. They have memos that they claim come from a major media organization, detailing what stories should not be covered and what the spin should be on whatever they do cover. It's even more 1984ish than the Fox memos, and you're welcome not to believe it (I don't), but it's at least symbolic of what's really going on.
