Laptops Stolen From Bush Campaign Office
More Karl Rove dirty tricks in the making?

By MELANTHIA MITCHELL, Associated Press Writer

SEATTLE - Three laptop computers containing campaign plans were stolen overnight from the Bush-Cheney state headquarters office, Republican officials said Friday.

Between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., after the last campaign worker had gone home from the office in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue, someone threw a rock through the office window of Jon Seaton, executive director for President Bush's state campaign, said Chris Vance, state GOP chairman.

Vance said two of the stolen laptops belonged to Seaton and Chris Taylor, head of the office's get-out-the-vote campaign. A third had been slated for a field office.

The computers contained much of the Bush-Cheney campaign strategy for the state and advertising schedules, Vance said.

They wouldn't leave their computer laying around in the open AND they would take the computer home with them in case they needed access or needed to do work while gone.

10. Well you know what's coming don't you ... a smear on Cameron Kerry
As it happened, the basement Cam and Vallely broke into also served an office belonging to one of Kerry's opponents. The next afternoon, the Lowell Sun covered the incident on its front page under a double-barreled headline: "Kerry Brother Arrested in Lowell ‘Watergate.'" "Cam was crushed," says Marco Trbovich, the House campaign's communications director. "But John suffered his brother no incrimination, no antagonism." Kerry maintained that his brother had been set up, and the scandal didn't prevent him from coasting to victory in the primary. It also was not a factor in his defeat in the general election. Credit for the loss rested largely with the Sun's editorial board, which viewed Kerry as a carpetbagging ultraliberal using outside money to try to buy a seat he would no doubt represent ineffectually. To ensure it covered all its points, the paper broke its anti-Kerry editorial into a four-part series.

13. "someone threw a rock through the office window"
Nothing like the hi-tech approach.

Probably sold them for a couple of hundred bucks.

Be interesting to know what's on them... but I wouldn't get close, or trust anything I found there.

As the day gets closer, our esteemed opponents will grow more devious (and desperate) and some others will (hopefully) rise to try to thwart their plans.

It looks like a common enough B&E and theft. But, of course, this is also good cover. So who knows? Rove, maybe.

16. Well, good place to go for expensive laptops

After all that fundraising and 'organizing', of course your average newspaper-reading larcenist knows that Republican HQ is going to have top of the line gizmos.

As for the oh-so-secret "Bush-Cheney campaign strategy for the state", no informed Democrat would care. The Rs don't have the base to win and if Washington State becomes as close as they need it to be to win it, Democrats' chances in the states that decide the election are zilch and it's all over anyway.

19. Well it gets even better
-snip-

State Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance called it a "Watergate-style break in" and said he suspects Democrats are behind it.

"If you're just some burglar looking for computers to sell to buy drugs you take every laptop in the office maybe," he said. "But they knew exactly whose computers to get. They got the executive director's computer and the get-out-the-vote director's computer."

-snip-

Vance said the break in follows reports of vandalized Bush campaign signs and what he said were telephone calls to voters alleging Bush would reinstate a military draft if re-elected.

"To me there is some scary stuff going on from liberal radicals whose Bush hatred is out of control," Vance said.

22. Not really Watergate-style
In Watergate, the people who broke in were involved in the RNC and the CIA. They picked the locks and posted look-outs. Other than these obvious differences...

Interesting that Vance is such a freakin' expert on what burglars do when they need drug money. Why on earth would you leave laptops with Soopah-Secret campaign information on them in an unattended office in a neighborhood not unaccustomed to break-ins, anyhow? This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

29. Police confirmed the burglary?
Bellevue police confirmed the burglary Friday afternoon but offered no support for Vance's claims about motive.

How were they able to confirm that the burglary took place?

They don't report where the computers were kept. In the office under lock and key? Out in the common area? In their conference room? Hidden in the ceiling?
