Poll question: The unofficial, who-won-the-debate poll... |
|
Personally, I call it a tie (and so did just about everyone I watched with... all dems)

great, and exceeded my expectations and hopes. We are firmly going in the right direction - we will be victorious in November!

3. I think Edwards edged out Cheney |
|
Edwards started off a bit weak on the foreign policy segment and ended up having to defend John Kerry, but two syllogisms and an analogy later, in the domestic issues part, Cheney was pissing blood! Apologies to John Stewart. He even had to thank JE for his remarks about his family. A Dem victory, but not a stunning one. I predicted that Cheney wouldn't have much to say about the economy or domestic issues. Guess I was right, Dr. Doom kept haing to bring it back to terrorist/terrorist/terrorist/9-11/9-11/fear/death/war/danger, and it got annoying. Thank a bunch Scaredy McFearalot!

4. I scored it 78 - 22 Edwards |
|
about an hour in, Cheney looked very old, very beaten and unable to really respond meaningfully to the questions.
If you listened carefully, he lapsed into Bush-like simplistic repetition. He had no real answers on any domestic question and changed the subject to "war on terror" at every opportunity, but had nothing more than platitudes to offer on that.

5. I voted "barely Cheney" |
|
I only saw the second half, though, and I understand Edwards came out guns a-blazin'. By the end of the debate it was clear that both guys just wanted to get out of there without saying something stupid.

9. Edwards barely and this is good. |
|
If Edwards had stomped all over the VP then people wouldn't have seen that it has been Cheney, not Bush who has been controlling the government.
Cheney had so much more of a grasp on everything than did Bush. Comparing their debates was revealing in itself. If Cheney had come prepared with 10 minutes worth of sound bites and nothing more, then Bush may have appeared more presidential.
The very fact that Cheney did better than Bush works in Kerry's favor.
I am curious as to how the Friday debates will turn out.
Edwards did great, but it was close and that is good for us.

Cheney was a better gameplayer. He was able to define the battlefield in more than one question. His total lack of emotion made the lies difficult to distinguish from the half-truths, and he did not allow himself to be ruffled the way shrub did.
Edwards, however, won on image, which is hard for democrats in general, as thinking people, to understand, much less pull off. He came off simpler, clearer, closer to the ground, and therefore less threatening, more sincere. In a way he outbushed Bush... I was reminded of my cringing moments during the 2000 debates when Gore said stuff only a government buff would understand, and Bush came back with bestselling platitudes.
Gore was right, and Cheney was lying, but both of them came off as cold and weird to the electorate. Bush is an asshole, and Edwards is great, but both of them seem to have the same populist appeal.
