How bad is it in Palmdale?
Is it really Repug heaven or are things changing with more people from LA moving east for cheaper housing?

Considering a move there or Denver but I am torn, as I love the access to Los Angeles/Vegas/San Diego, etc but Palmdale itself seems kindah dead. I am also reading horrible stuff from gangs to skinheads.

What's the scoop?

1. I don't know about it being a Republican haven, but . . .
. . . I can think of places I'd rather be.

My aunt used to live in Lancaster, so I know what I'm talking about.

And if I had to live in palmdale or go back to the midwest. I would go back to the corn fields.

5. Or Credence Clearwater
I'm originally from Stockton, so I know how it bad it must be to be stuck in Lodi again.

4. Zappa wrote about Lancaster and Palmdale,
and I drove through there a few years ago. FZ spent his formative years there, and wrote a song about the area called "Village of the Sun."
Not a lot of life there that we could see. But we didn't stop, either. Next time, I will.

6. MIL used to live in Palmdale

til she passed away last year. I. will. never. go. there. willingly. again.

Miserable weather. It's high desert, so it's dry and windy .

I'm not sure if Repug or gangs, but my friend's son is a deputy sheriff there and says that almost everyone there has a record. That may be a slight exaggeration but there's a lot of meth labs in the area.

We did a Megan's law search and found a sex offender listed on MIL's street.

7. I used to live in Palmdale
years ago (1998-1999) and I found it was a lot safer on the west side than it was on the east side. however, it's been years and maybe things have changed. As for people being progressive there, I highly doubt it, but I wasn't politically in tune back then.

Good luck!

8. From what I've heard...
Quite a few weird Fundies and quite a bit of intolerance. But given that I'm offering this info. from a source other than myself, take that for whatever it's worth...

Good luck finding out.

10. My cousin just moved to Palmdale...
He moved from Burbank to Palmdale because of the cost of housing being cheaper, and still commutes to the valley every day. I do know that it is high desert, similar to that of Hesperia, Victorville, Barstow, etc... Haven't heard much bad about it. My cousin did mention that Palmdale now has everything that any other city, even a shopping mall =) Either way, myself, I would never in a million years dream of moving to Palmdale. I live two blocks from the beach in Encinitas, CA and love where I live. Yes, Duke Cunningham might be a neighbor, but I have gotten used to living around a bunch of Rethugs! =)

12. city of palmdale's site

http://www.cityofpalmdale.org/

when my MIL was in the hospital there, whenever we visited, which was often, there would usually be a hospital room w/ sheriff's deputies guarding it.
high security at the hospital too, not like where i live in the south bay.

but they DO have a WalMart there, lol!

14. other places
I moved from San Diego to 29 Palms. It's the high desert, and a similar climate to Palmdale. It does have a Marine base and lots of republicans, but there's also a lot of artists and other fun people. Joshua Tree is a cool town too, and the national park is right there.

Honestly I sold my house and wouldn't move out there again any time soon. It's not the weather, it's not the scorpions, it's the price of gas. You are totally dependant on cars for everything, and distances are long. I think that housing prices will drop drastically in places like that when gas prices spike.

16. There's a Harbour Freight store (tools) and a pretty darn good speed shop.
Mike's Transmissions is up there, and he does some killer Ford AOD trans for racing, as well as other types.

I got some good deals on some big block Ford parts.

Fireworks sales around this time of year.

Other than that, I have no need to go there. Too remote, and a bit RW.
