San Diego--anyone care to weigh in on these areas 4 me?
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but I may have a class in the San Diego in September.

What is Encinitas like? Carlsbad? Are either of these liberal/progressive? If not, I can wait until the class is closer to me.

Thanks! :)

1. carlsbad has some money, so may not be so progressive..
Sensinitas and Leucadia, on the other hand, are way cool. Bear in mind, both of these locales are in the North County, so I hope your class is in the area as well.

2. Check the congressmen...
they'll vote thier values... liberal areas, liberal congressmen.

South San Diego has a moderate/liberal... heavily hispanic and union. North of San Diego has Randy Cunningham... conservative, and under bribery investigation. East of San Diego you have Santee and El Cajon... and they don't call it Klan-T for nothing.

The areas around the colleges are progressive... except USD (University of San Diego), which is run by the Catholic Church. They're progressive about the poor, reactionary about gays/womans rights.

Now I need to look up where Encinitas and Carlsbad are... you'd think I'd know, living here for 20 years.

7. nowhere close to any place you would want to stay
high traffic, boring suburban location.

If your choice is between Carlsbad and Encinitas, take Encinitas (IF west of the 5), or one of the several communities to the south, Cardiff by the Sea or Solana Beach, home of the Belly Up Tavern. As mentioned above, Leucadia is OK too. :hi:

10. Across the street from MCAS Miramar.
Not a good spot unless you like Marines, jet noise, and places designed to get money from Marines.

11. That's not too far from Miramar Air Base...

I live in Mira Mesa which is just a shade north of Miramar... It's a bit redneck, but not as bad as some places here. Mira Mesa's just east of La Jolla, but near as expensive to live though. Not sure if I'd buy here or not (considering buying a place now someplace here). If you do move there or Mira Mesa, get in touch with the Black Mountain Dems here though. A good progressive bunch of folks here.

I think I'd pick Encinitas over Carlsbad as a more progressive community to live in and its closer to the city too. Carlsbad has a bit older population and is a bit more corporate. Encinitas has a few more surfers in it, and has a lot more "holistic" businesses in it. It could have a future like Santa Cruz, but I think there needs to be a heck of a lot more people like you moving there first.

If you need a high tech job though, Mira Mesa or Encinitas isn't too bad a location. A lot of businesses in the Sorento Valley area, which is the north edge of the border between La Jolla and Mira Mesa (Highway 805).

17. I also live in Mira Mesa
And I have been going to meetings of the Black Mountain Democrats.

I have met you and know who you are.

I have lived in Mira Mesa a number of years now; I moved here to be close to my workplace in the Sorrento Mesa area.

I had been doing consulting work up until recently, and am now looking for another job; I am hoping to be able to stay where I am and not have to move.

21. Hey Mike...
Hope to see you in this coming meeting. I'm swamped right now with so much stuff nagging at me. Thought I'd lost my checkbook precinct walking last night and spent another hour or so backtracking to find it and found it in a place later I hadn't looked at home... I was also panicking since I thought it had a check in it that I'd not been able to deposit in ATM's over the weekend (missing deposit slips or non-functioning deposit slots) from my insurance company that had paid for my blown wheel and tire from an unfixed pothole here as well. It's been that kind of week the last week or so.

Hoping after Donna gets reelected, things will start getting better and slow down a bit and I can enjoy a vacation in August.

Any ideas for a good spot? Do any of the good restaurants in Old Town have rooms for private functions?

15. Lots of hotels in Encinitas. Encinitas votes blue.
If you have any questions, pm me. There are a few of us who live in this area. It's a beach town. It's very nice.

16. Encinitas is where my heart is...
I have grown up in Cardiff, which is part of encinitas, moved to Las Vegas and come back to Leucadia now. This is an awesome place with really cool, unique people. The YMCA is a nice place with a rad skate park. There is a really good restaurant, The Roxy, on Highway 101 and D Street. It's mostly vegan but they do have some chicken dishes. Also, the numerous Mexican stands are worth stopping for!! Nothing beats the San Diego Mexican food =)

20. Did you say where you are going to school?
Or is it one of those two-week things in a hotel?

If you are going to spend any time here, you may want to consider getting closer to downtown, North Park, South Park, Kensington, Golden Hill, Hillcrest are all pretty liberal areas with lots of affordable--keep in mind we have a very broad definition of affordable--apartments.

Of course for the ultimate in blue community living there's Ocean Beach.

22. Hillcrest
Is as about as left as you can get here. Come by on the weekends and you can catch the communist worker's party volunteers selling newsletters on the corner of 5th and university ;) complete with the table set up and piles of pamphlets.. I have friendly debates with them from time to time.. they're pretty cool.

Any time a car drives through the neighborhood with a W sticker or Bush Cheney one, people know. Later at a coffeeshop I'll hear someone say 'did you see that car drive through with the bush sticker? wierd.'

Plus - I used to live on 6th ave, on the GLBT pride parade route and made money every summer by making labels to put on 1.00 water bottles saying 'pride' or 'gay' water and charging 4 dollars for 'official' parade refreshment ;)

I know that sounds bad but then I turned around and invested the profits in the local economy (i.e. retro clothing stores)

23. North Park, here
Adjacent to Hillcrest to the East. Another area where a car with a Bush sticker will stand out.

You can find Anti-Bush posters on telephone poles, peace signs in peoples' windows and diversity like you wouldn't believe.
