Suits Filed on Abortion Ballot Item
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-me-abortion6aug06,1,526903.story?coll=la-news-politics-california

A November ballot initiative that would require parental notification for minors seeking abortions sparked its first public fireworks this week, as supporters and opponents accused one another of lying.

In lawsuits filed in Sacramento County Superior Court, foes and promoters of Proposition 73 said information submitted for the official voter ballot pamphlet was false or misleading, and asked a judge to intervene. The dueling suits ask that certain language be struck from the pamphlet, which will be mailed to voters before the Nov. 8 special election. A hearing is likely next week.

Proposition 73 would prohibit abortions for girls younger than 18 until 48 hours after a physician notified the minor's parent or legal guardian, except in medical emergencies. Judges could grant exemptions for girls they deemed mature enough to make an independent decision, or when notifying parents would not be in the minor's "best interests."

2. So what if the pregnancy is due to incest?
And I do remember the first time I heard from a doctor (father-in-law of a friend) in conversation about the latest incest pregnancy he had to terminate -- this was ages ago during the dark days of pre-Roe v. Wade.

The state was California -- at the time something like this was beyond my imagination.

This damned "father" impregnated two of his daughters -- and the medical professionals involved did terminate the pregnancy. But it wasn't an easy matter --

Evidently pregnancy resulting from incest are more common than most normal people want to believe. To protect the real innocents -- is very difficult.

So . . . notifying the father of the girl who is also the father of the child?? If some of the doctors and other medical professionals who have to deal with the real people rather than the political abstract concept of "abortion" could tell some of the real stories perhaps people would realize that each abortion involves very difficult choices.

I will never know what happened to that "father" who raped his own daughters. . . . but I hope they got away and survived. What I do know is that some of the homeless kids -- the runaways -- the disposable children are running away from some sort of abuse.

At the same time -- parents are expected to be responsible for their children. If the parent and child had a good relationship -- then the child would naturally turn to the parent. If a law must force this notification -- then the parent shouldn't be told.
