1. Folks, this IS important to get signed...
Two things can happen if he resigns...

If he resigns before February, then state law calls for a mandatory special election to replace him that is *open* and not one with primaries and also one without a runoff that will allow someone with a plurality of votes to win! That might give someone like Busby a great shot to win against multiple Rethug candidates that she might not otherwise have in 2006 against a single Rethug candidate.

If he resigns after February, the seat stays open and the Rethugs get one less vote in the House until 2006. Unfortunately, that also means that we in his district here in North County of San Diego are unrepresented in this crucial time period until 2006 too! Really important that we can get someone decent representing our wishes soon! Then we can have someone to write to that can actually do stuff for us!

2. Wasn't Cunningham
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 07:50 PM by Oerdin
The shit bag who sold his beach house for several times market rate (netting millions) to a defense contractor who had its contract up for vote by Cunningham and other Republicans? I hope people understand that laugh at the people who use exit polls to claim voter fraud and upon critical examination I feel most similar claims made on this web site don't hold water, however, this one does. This is as cut and dried a case of corruption as has ever been seen especially since the defense contractor in question turned around and sold the beach house at the market rate (realizing millions in capital loses)just one month later.

I'm happy to report that the local news media here in San Diego have been all over this story and I hope the man hangs. Though I must admit that past corruption trials have been lack luster in their results.

3. Yup, that's Cunningham!
Your numbers are a little off, though. The amount of the "bribe," if calculated by the loss the contractor took on the beach house was $700,000. I'm sure the defense contract he got in exchange was worth in the millions, though (are there any that aren't?).

You can get a lot of information about this scandal here (Including links):

BTW, I am a San Diego native and often miss home. Always good to see a new DUer from the home town. :hi:

6. JUST IN: ADCS, another Cunningham donor is being searched in Poway!
Another thread on this in LBN too... The gears are movin'!

Calif. firm tied to congressman searched

Associated Press

POWAY, Calif. - Federal officials searched an information management company with ties to Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, who is under investigation for his dealings with a defense contractor.

Agents from the FBI, Internal Revenue Service and other agencies served a warrant at Poway-based ADCS Inc. on Tuesday, FBI special agent Kiffa Shirley said.

Shirley did not provide details about the investigation.

ADCS specializes in converting paper documents into computer records and has received millions of dollars in military contracts over the last decade. Its political action committee has donated more than $30,000 to Cunningham, an eight-term Republican.

7. His (Duke) gravy train is over
If he was an "honorable" person, he would have resigned when this scandal came to light.

Hopefully, the Republicans in the 50th will wake up from their long, deep sleep and also demand that he leave.

8. I think it will be up to us to pressure him to quit!
Like I noted earlier, the Republicans don't stand to gain anything, and stand to lose a lot more if he resigns earlier. It's up to US to put on the pressure for him to resign, and I for one, am REALLY glad that this campaign is starting up! And even though he'll try and support some of his right wingers now for his district, it is a good point that he's been laying low and avoiding public appearances that aren't in front of his more right wing friends, NOT what a representative should be doing. So that is a great way to frame the petition. Hopefully get some of those in the middle that aren't his "benefactors" to also get frustrated too.

9. Here's a newer story out from KFMB...
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 07:48 PM by calipendence
http://www.kfmb.com/stories/story.20815.html

This one indicates that Mitchell Wade used to work at ADCS, and that they were looking for accounting and purchasing records and any paperwork relating to the House Appropriations Sub-Committee. Also indicated was that they searched current company owner Brent Wilkes' home too. They had boxes full and vans loaded up with evidence.
