L.A. high school loses accreditation (Crenshaw)

This school is nationally well known as a basketball powerhouse, and has been featured on TV shows and movies such as "Moesha" and "Boyz n' the Hood".

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Los Angeles's Crenshaw High School has lost its accreditation, a move that could give its students trouble when they apply to college.

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges told the school this week that it was losing accreditation, the Los Angeles Times reported. While accreditation is voluntary, most public and private schools seek the group's stamp of approval.

The association said it has "great concerns regarding student achievement, the implementation of a curriculum and instructional program aligned with California academic standards, and the capacity of the school to address other critical areas."

Crenshaw has 3,100 students, most of them from low-income families.

1. LA has some really bad school.
I used to know a fellow in my Reserve unit who's day job was as a school teacher in LA Unified and his advice was that if you had children and lived in LA to send them to private school or move. He also said less then 25% of the teachers sent their kids to public schools in LA. If that isn't a ringing damnation on how shitty LA Unified is then I don't know what is.

2. A friend shared this w/me last night--I'm still in shock.

I just don't understand how this happened... It's horrible, where will all those kids go to school. Most of their parents couldn't possibly afford to send them to private schools.

The schools that are in the district, but a distance from Crenshaw are already quite full--this is not a good situation.:(

3. It is a bad situation
As a veteran of the California public schools I can tell you that the WASC only pulls the trigger if a school is in REALLY bad shape. I guess some of the private schools could provide scholarships to some of the best students, but that will only be a bandaid solution. I'm not really sure what happens now.
