Old cat needs a home....
Hi all.

A friend of mine in San Jose is in possession of a 16 year-old cat whose owner just moved to Hawaii, where the restrictions on animal prohibited bringing the cat.

By all accounts, she's a lovely old girl. But she needs a home.

I know it's an unlikely possibility, but if anybody in the San Jose area wants a nice old cat for a probable short-term relationship, PM me.

2. I can't keep her...
I already have a dog and three cats. And introducing an old female wouldn't work. The dog loves cats a lot more than the cats love dogs - he'd just annoy her to death.

Thanks for the idea of posting in the lounge.

3. ok - best wishes for that
please do update us

i have 3 established (rescued) cats and had to rescue another female who was used to being an only cat
and with the established alpha it didnt go well but we have been fortunate that we have been able to keep them living in separate spaces even in a 500 sf apt

over the years it has gotten better but only with lots of time and encouragement

and we dont have a dog which often makes a difference

thanks again for caring so much about animals
always something i appreciate deeply

4. I would but have 2 dogs
1 dog is very sweet and basicly ignores cats but
our adopted 3 year old lab is most likely to
aggressively friendly with cats .

5. Hawaii has new rules.

Would this info help?

http://starbulletin.com/2005/08/24/news/story13.html

...'Owners have embraced the five-day-or-less quarantine program by complying with rules requiring advance vaccinations and blood tests for their animals. Some 86 percent of dogs and cats entering the state in the past year qualified for release at Honolulu Airport on arrival, according to a state Department of Agriculture new release'

.....In the year ending in June 2005, some 612 animals spent the full four months in quarantine, 220 were held 30 days and 225 were held for up to five days.

An animal may bypass quarantine if it has received:

» Two rabies vaccinations, with the timing established in the rules.
» A blood serum test showing a rabies vaccination response.
» A 120-day waiting period after the blood test, before importation.
» An identification microchip implanted.

7. As a vet who occasionally goes through the process to get cats
ready for shipping to HI, I have to caution folks that the schedule for all the different requirements is VERY STRICT and must be absolutely complied with. You have to start the process 4 months in advance of going to HI. And if you mess up in even the tiniest way with paperwork, let alone medical procedures, it's 4 months quarantine there, nonnegotiable.

6. Shame on that owner...my cat is 16 and he
has cancer and will not live much longer....I would never think of just abandoning him.

I am so sorry about the cat, but it is soooo unlikely that you will find someone to take him at that age.

It was very nice of you to try though. Good luck....I suspect you have now found yourself a new pet. LOL

8. Well, there's a sucker born every minute...
as the saying goes.

This time, that sucker is me. :)

"Gearhead" (yes, that is her name) made her first appearance at my home over the weekend. She is a tiny little thing with a face that should be featured on mycathatesyou.com

She has spent her first few days living in my closet and screaming at any of the other cats that come too close to the door. It sounds like I have a Tasmanian devil living in my room. :D She's pretty spry for 16, though she does have a bit of arthritis and has trouble climbing.

I think her owners were worried about her making it through the whole Hawaii process. I can understand their worry. I'll be keeping them updated on Gearhead, and if they should decide they want to try to bring her over, I'll be happy to do so.

I'll post a pic when I can.
