Claim targets candidate for top CHP post
A subordinate says he showed off nude photographs of her.

A prominent candidate to replace retiring CHP Commissioner D.O. "Spike" Helmick has been the subject of a recent state sexual harassment investigation and a $5 million civil claim for allegedly showing nude photographs of a subordinate officer to high-ranking officials while on duty.

California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Art Acevedo kept sexually explicit Polaroid photographs of the woman in the glove compartment of his state-issued car and displayed them to various supervisors between 1995 - when his brief affair with the officer ended - and 2002, according to claims filed with three state agencies, which were obtained by The Bee.

When the photos were taken, Acevedo was a sergeant in the agency's internal affairs bureau, but since has risen to become one of four CHP assistant chiefs overseeing the Los Angeles area. An anonymous letter detailing Acevedo's conduct was sent to state leaders a week after Acevedo declared his intent to compete for Helmick's job.
