South Bay Rep. Jane Harman was just one of four Democrats who broke ranks and sided with Republicans in a vote that would have rewritten a controversial part of the Patriot Act.

The measure was defeated Thursday after last-minute lobbying prompted nine Republicans to switch their votes from yes to no resulting in a 210-210 tie. A spokeswoman for Harman, D-El Segundo, said that the congresswoman was not available for comment Friday, but said she offered an explanation in a written statement.

"Although I have expressed serious concerns about our government's ability to search library and bookstore records, I do not believe that the Sanders Amendment is the proper vehicle for addressing this concern," the release stated. "I reluctantly opposed it."

Christ! This makes me wish I could still be registered to vote in California even as I live in Maryland, just so Jane would listen to me. If I lived in her district, this would've caused me to withhold my vote from her -- and you can bet your ass I would've told her about it.

Too bad she won't listen to a non-constituent.

Hmm . . . I think my uncle lives in her district. ("Dear Bill: did you know that your rep in Congress fucked up this week?")

God dammit! I donated to her gubernatorial primary campaign! She'd've been a better governor than Davis.
