SACRAMENTO (AP) - Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is considering a run for state treasurer or controller in the next statewide election, but said he won't seek the state's top office after a disastrous showing in the recall election.
Bustamante, who ran unsuccessfully against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 2003 recall election, told the Oakland Tribune that he's frustrated with developments at the Capitol.
The lieutenant governor said he's concerned about the budget impasse, a lack of tax hikes, higher college fees, spending cuts and uncertainties in the state's future.
"Although he (Schwarzenegger) may, because of his persona, maintain his popularity, there's real damage taking place in California to many of the people that I would have attempted to protect," said the lieutenant governor.
