Vicious Street Thugs Terrorize Oakland Homeless

OAKLAND -- Advocates and police toured the streets and back alleys of Oakland Monday, urging homeless residents to seek shelter in the wake of a series of vicious beatings -- one fatal -- by group of young men.
Authorities identified the 52-year-old victim of the fatal weekend beating as Dalrus Joseph Brown, who may have been sleeping when the suspects assaulted him at a makeshift campsite near the National Recycling Center. Other homeless people witnessed the minutes-long attack.
"It is pretty cowardly for a group of people to viciously attack an obviously defenseless person," said Sgt. Bruce Brock. "He was a completely innocent victim."

Two weeks ago, three teenagers in Oakland were arrested for severely beating a homeless man with a board at a different location. At least two other victims have been hospitalized from recent attacks.
