McCloskey takes challenge to run against Pombo!
This is GREAT news!
Former Peninsula Congressman Paul "Pete" McCloskey Jr., best remembered for his Vietnam War opposition and his speech calling for the impeachment of President Nixon, will announce his candidacy Monday in Lodi as a Republican challenger to Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy.
The feisty 78-year-old beat the bushes for months in his quest to find a Republican willing to run against the seven-term incumbent with whom he has major political differences.
But when no one volunteered, McCloskey asked, "Why not me?"
After all, he said, Benjamin Franklin was 82 when he cast his vote for the U.S. Constitution, and former President Bush sky dived on his 80th birthday.
McCloskey, a decorated Marine who served in the Korean War and an attorney, says he wants to restore Republican values such as fiscal restraint, reduced government and balanced budgets.

1. Glad Pete is running
I had visions (fantasies) of putting a cot and a change of clothes in my office and running against Pombo as a Democrat. (Pombo's District sneaks over the mountain into Silicon Valley)

My wife and kids' reactions --->:rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

Back in Pennsylvania we had a State Senator who ran from an efficiency apartment behind his restaurant.

2. Cool, he may be the only person who could defeat Pombo in the uber-red
eleventh district. What's more, Pombo's fate will be determined in the primary election, ,June 6, 2006!. Spotlight on slime Pombo! Hoot!

5. Your thread makes it official - McCloskey is running!
Lots of local TV news coverage on the story. Lots of talk of the DeLay and Abramoff connections in the stories. I like!

Here is a snippet from the article you posted that indicates how Pombo intends to run his dirty campaign. The nation will be watching this race!

<snip>

To keep McCloskey from showing any strength, Pombo's campaign team "will make sure every Republican knows (McCloskey's) maverick record,'' Hoffenblum added. "By the time they're through, people will think he's (Democrat National Committee Chairman) Howard Dean's brother-in-law."

<more>

6. Send in K-K-Karl to help out.
Actually, I think Pombo doesn't need any help with dirty tactics.

7. with 20 something R seats
in CA and a nasty R primary & the loss of the Abramoff $ machine the future looks bright. I hope Pombo comes out of the primary hurt in both standings with voters and finances. CA has enough dirty repukes to turn the house its self. which I guess would lead to the fantasy of Pelosi to be a lame duck Pres in the summer of '08
