CA 3rd Dist: Ose retires; can Castillo beat Lungren?

California's 3rd Congressional District lies mostly in eastern Sacramento County, the suburbs where the Republicans live. It used to be a Dem district (Vic Fazio), but Doug Ose (R) has held it fir the past few years. Now Ose is retiring, and former Long Beach Congressman, Attorney General and failed gubernatorial candidate Dan Lungren beat out State Sen. Rico Oller and Ose's sister Mary for the Republican nomination. Lungren moved back to Sacramento from Maryland (suburban D.C.) where's he's been a lobbyist since he got his ass handed to him by Gray Davis in 1998. He's also a real wingnut.

Question: Does Democratic challenger Gabe Castillo have a shot at beating this carpetbagging scumbag?

Castillo just fired his campaign manager for being "too liberal". Like Lungren, he's anti-choice. After firing his campaign manager he's quoted as saying he thinks that Democrats have gone too far on abortion, guns and gays.

Then again, maybe the district would love him.

But even if, he's just a Republican in Dem clothing. Bah.

The statements in sang froid's post are way off the mark.

Well, with one exception: Maybe the people in California's 3rd Congressional District WILL love Gabe Castillo.

Interested people should check out Gabe's Web site at http://castilloforcongress.org to find out the truth.

Gabe is a fiscal conservative, but he is not a Democrat in name only - that's why he has the endorsement of the entire California Democratic Congressional Coalition.

Gabe believes the election should not focus on wedge issues, but rather on health care, jobs and common-sense tax policies that help working families and small businesses.

And consider this: If Lungren wins, he brings 10 years of seniority with him. Just the thought of a Lungren-Doolittle-Delay leadership troika in the House should sent shivers down every Democrat's spine.

8. Lungren is horrible

Even if Castillo were a Zell Miller-style DINO, I'd still vote for him over Lungren.

(But, alas, I'm right next door in Matsui's district.)

Too slick by far. But then again, he's not Lundgren. Got to be some good in that. It's just that he's not the great white hope he makes himself out to be...

I used to be in the 3rd district and was a huge Vic Fazio follower. When Ose moved in, I began my fight against him until I got redistricted out. I guess the only way they can win is to export their headaches.
