CA: State Unemployment Rate Jumps To 7.3 Percent

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- State officials said California's unemployment rate jumped to 7.3 percent in July, up from a revised 7 percent in June.

The jobless rate announced Friday by the state Employment Development Department represents a significant increase from the 5.4 figure in July 2007.

Excluding farm workers, payroll employment in California decreased by some 14,900 jobs last month.

Officials said some 1.4 million Californians were unemployed in July, up 70,000 from June and 374,000 compared with July of last year.
