Bay Area Cali's ..anyone read/see these newspapers today?
I had hoped I could get a graphic from the SJ Mercury News to copy here..but the link doesn't provide it. :(

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/10121528.htm?1c

The San Francisco Chronicle (I think that's the one) had a similar piece.

The article I speak of in the first paper had a graphic of how California isn't so blue...hence my previous warnings about Californians TAKING HEED. The front page of Mercury News had a graph on it showing just how SQUEEZED the liberals are out here. It had a cut away graphic showing that the bay area and some areas in the southland were solid blue, but the rest of the state is encroaching RED. The article showed an interview with some lady living in Modesto who was "praising jesus" for the Bush win...

The articles are interesting but if you can get a hard copy of the SJMNews, the front page drives home the hard cold facts. :scared:

1. urban vs. rural
All states are like that. In Oregon, seems like the poorer the county the more red it is. You'd think they'd look around and get a clue, but noooo, they blame the liberal taxes, regulations and social programs. The idea that blue areas invest in their economies and communities just doen't seem to kick in.

2. A lady in Modesto? ONE lady???
I will say it as many times as I have to, one jesus freak does not 8 million votes make. The religious surge is the BushCo cover story. It's the COVER STORY. Those votes don't exist. They are OUR votes, moved into the Bush column.

Jesus what will it take before you realize the news is pursuing a completely bogus rationale?

3. Aquart, these people are those that have "fled" the bay area
because they (first off) needed cheaper housing--we all know it's very expensive around here--they also have a STRONG religious bent.

My mother is buried over there in that valley. My sister lives further up in the foothills of the Sierra now, but she is surrounded with "good 'ole boys"...lock and load types, anti gay types etc.

My daughter is living in Chico with her father who is a RABID republican...former John Bircher. My sister n law, an old school dem, lives in Red Bluff; her beautiful daughter is lesbian and she had a problem with that(sis n law is also a devout catholic)and refused to acknowledge GL rights.

The Free Republic website is from the Fresno area fercryingoutloud.

The people in the rural areas of this state are a mix of non native californians from other "red" states.

Even my little "liberal" town on Monterey bay has seen an encroaching (like fungus) conservative mindset. If it weren't for the evironmentalists, around my area, the "church" people would have built mulitple mega churches by now.

Perhaps half the state conservative vote is republican for issues of taxes and big business, the other half is DEFINATELY "morality/church" driven.

THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR OUR STATE....it shouldn't be taken lightly.

Respectfully....SB :hi:

4. are you suffering from red state/blue state mapitis?
It's the number of people that count, at least until the electoral college kicks in. Re-cast your map as a population map and you'll see what I mean. What is the population of the rural and what is the population of the urban areas? That is what we need to be concerned with.

The usual map shown on tV gives the impression the U.S. is primarily red when it isn't.

7. Perhaps I'm dense........BUT
It is the religious RIGHT that is taking over way too many communities. Forget the map for a moment and think on that! And the "movement" is spreading...yes, right here in Calif. Pretty soon it will be intrenched in the usually liberal areas too...Moreover, we have our state senators and representatives to worry about too...how long will our Dem reps be able to hold out???

I realize, btw, that the neo fascist conservatives have fanned this flame and are USING these folks to help themselve...but it doen't lessen the immediacy of WATCHING OUR BACKS!

5. I am from the red valley
of CA, but belong to the Dem minority. Apparently, the coast and major cities are "blue" and the valley is "red". It is like that across the country. Someone explain to me why that is? Why is rural America Republi-can'ts and the city folk Dems for the most part?

6. 'dirt don't vote'
as a wise DUer mentioned here before.

heh, trust us californians. there's a hell of a lot of urbanites here. SF bay area roughly 5 mil, LA roughly 8-10 mil - that's roughly half the state right there. trust us, we thoroughly outnumber the psychos. and many of those rural people care much about the same stuff as we do, don't dismiss them yet. some have jealousy issues with urbanites, but many of them are approachable and sane.

remember, it's easier to steal votes in rural areas, need less machines, have less eyes watching, have less lawyers and jaded, savvy citizens. they believe in the honesty of good folk and this can easily lead them to being taken for a ride by city slicker republicans.

8. Even SD County is becoming less repuke
San Diego County is a traditional GOP stronghold, and Bush only carried it by 5 percentage points.

And on top of that, when they're finished with the hand count, it looks like a female, Democratic, write-in candidate will have unseated the incumbent wingnut Mayor.

9. most impressive.
perhaps michael moore, randi rhodes, and others are right. we are writing off these people as 'conservative yahoos' and we are really forgetting they are often liberal in thinking. everyone wants their children to do better than they, and to do that a lot of progressive policies would have to be adopted to make it that better world.

10. Stockton has been Dem
State Senator Mike Machado, who survived a vicious campaign with the BFEE's hand picked boy, Stockton Mayor Gary Podesto, is an example of a typical Valley Dem. His base of support comes from Big Ag and Labor. If you doubt it then explain how Bush can carry San Joaquin County and his hand picked puppet gets pummeled by a dem even if you throw out the 12k vote advantage Machado had in Yolo County. I say hand picked puppet because Podesto mined the same moneybag vein that repuke presidents, governors, senators have drilled since Reagan won his first term.
