Urgent Appeal To Those In Wendy Greuel's District (East SFV)
Hi to my neighbors on DU who may stumble across this, can you help with a local Davy v Goliath issue in our back yard?

I am totally outraged that Kulak's Woodshed, which is a non-profit acoustic music venue in North Hollywood, has been targeted by the city for all sorts of ridiculous "varience" issues.

Kulak's is a labor of love and a totally non-commercial venue. They don't sell alcohol, they webcast shows for free and they close at 10:00. Within 5 miles of my house there are probably 6 "nude girl" venues and yet the City is harassing the one place I can take my 14 year old daughter to hear music. They don't efven sell alcohol. They sell nothing! It's outrageous they are being targeted like this.

We desperately need letters of support to go to Wendy Greuel. Here is the letter from Paul Kulak to Kulak's membership list. If you agree this is a positive force in our community please write a short letter, it would mean the world to us. The hearing is this week, Dec. 10th so time is of the essence. If all goes well, let's meet up at the Woodshack and celebrate!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU AND SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR NEIGHBORS PLEASE!
============================================================
I’m sending this special and urgent letter to you because you live in L.A. Council member Wendy Greuel’s district (#2). As you know the Woodshed has been beleaguered with permit issues with the City of LA. In order to comply with these issues, we need to be approved for a Variance Permit from the City of LA.

Wendy Greuel is THE person who can see to it that we succeed. Without her help we will surely fail. She has been on our side in the past & we want to encourage her continued support but we need you to make sure she follows through.

On December 10th we will be attending a hearing where we will be going before the City of LA Zoning Department and asking them to approve a use/parking variance application I submitted recently that will allow us to stay open. You are also invited to come.

Please help me secure Wendy Greuel’s support by sending her a short letter/fax and placing a phone call to her office. The information she will need is below.

Also, please send me a copy of the letter/email you send to Wendy Greuel.

Thank You so MUCH & Happy Holidays!

Paul Kulak

(PS. That non-refundable variance permit application fee cost me nearly $7,500 of borrowed money. I’m serious. Please go to http://www.kulakswoodshed.com/receipts.html and look at the receipts I have posted on the Kulak’s Woodshed website for everyone to see.)

2. No
No it is on Laurel Canyon Blvd & Magnolia Blvd. It's a business district -- by Carter Sexton Art Supplies & The Hemster tailor shop. All the businesses around there close around 6 pm so we always park right on Laurel Canyon. I do not think this is generated by compaints from the neighbors (it's my neighborhood) but rather the City wanting to get a non-profit out for revenue reasons? It's the only reason I can think of!

3. I'm pretty familiar with that area
You might want to go door to door and just ask people if they're bothered by it.

However I can't understand how in commercial zoning a non-profit would require a variance. If you know what your zoning is you can find out yourself at:

4. It's A Very, Very Tiny Storefront!
I drove by it for years until a band I knew played there!

Oh it's some kind of "nightclub" bullshit they are pinning on Kulaks. They made them temporarily "convert to a private club" which means that nobody can just drop in anymore without a "membership" (they are charging $2 for a lifetime membership.) Something about they are not licensed to be a "club" which, they aren't a club, they're a stage with a webcast more or less.

This place is like Field Of Dreams, seriously -- the guy has lost his shirt on it since the beginning but it was a dream of his, I have seen so many great shows there. Check out the calendar at kulakswoodshed.com and drop by one night, or look at the webcast.

There isn't even access to the surrounding residential streets there -- everyone parks on Laurel Canyon or Magnolia. It's totally zero impact on the surrounding residents. I have been knocking on doors to get support for it and 90% of the residents don't even know it's there! It has a 40 person capacity. They even let you come with your dog! It's really a cool place.
