(04-15) 16:41 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

Partisan politics in the Capitol may have sunk to a new low.

Democratic Controller Steve Westly, a likely challenger to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger next year, has lifted nary a finger to tell the Republican governor about a wad of cash California's first couple has in the state's lost and found account.

The controller's unclaimed property bureau has about $4.1 billion in forgotten assets — including $248.49 Schwarzenegger earned while working for an outfit called SCIE, based in Santa Monica. Maria Shriver has more than $1,000 in unclaimed cash owed to her from movie companies, Tiffany Merchandise Credits and the Southern California Gas Co.

1. Yep. When the government does the job it's supposed to
and follows the law, that's "partisan."

I notice the cowardly AP writer didn't even put a byline.

2. Hell, doctors offices as well as dentist offices do the same thing.
If you have a credit on your account, they won't tell you unless you ask for it. However, they do tell you on your next visit (if there is another one) about the credit toward your account plus what the visit costs. Hospitals do the same thing.

However, you only have one year in which to collect the money and/or request for it if you have not had another appointment/hospitalization. Just like insurance companies do. You have up to one year to file a claim. After that, they don't give a hoot.
