Area lawyers, judges and government officials gathered in Wheaton Sunday during DuPage County's first Red Mass, an event highlighted by the presence of U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) Justice Antonin Scalia (news - web sites).

The Red Mass is celebrated annually to start the judicial year.

Scalia, 68, was presented with the Award of St. Thomas More at a brunch after Mass at St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church, 101 W. Loop Road.

The DuPage County St. Thomas More Society was founded last year.

Scalia was given a standing ovation by the several hundred government officials, lawyers, judges and religious leaders and their families in attendance. Many wore red.
