Originally a native of E. St. Louis, I grew up watching the great teams of the sixties (Gibson, Brock, Carlton, Flood, Maris, Cepeda). When they sucked in the seventies, we stayed loyal. They rocked again in the eighties, then sucked again in the nineties. Now they're back, but the fans have been there the whole time.

I will grant you that Cubs fans are unusually loyal, as well, because they've had to be. Perhaps the reason that it looks to you like Cards fans are fair weatherites is because you can't relate to those periods when we're even more excited than usual. I suppose that our regular year in and year out loyalty looks somehow less enthusiastic compared to the peaks we've had in the sixties, eighties, and naughties.

And BTW, I know any number of Cubs fans who would have given anything to be the team the Red Sox swept...
