Iowa City Drowning in Booze Culture
Iowa City, Ia. - Iowa City, with a reputation for easy access to beer and hard liquor, recorded more alcohol-related violations in 2003 than Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Cedar Falls combined, data compiled by the Des Moines Sunday Register show.

In addition, hundreds of University of Iowa students were ordered into alcohol-related counseling in 2003-04, topping the numbers from Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa combined, data show.

Is there a solution?

1. Oh the drunks that I've drunk in ol' I.C.!
Live in Arizona now but Iowa City is just a good ol' respite from the cornfields and the "we close at 9:30PM" small towns of the Iowa countryside.

2. Stop treating alcohol like a forbidden fruit
Along with education about responsible alcohol consumption, rather than expecting everyone to be a tee-totaler till age 21.

3. I have easy access to booze too..(too easy)..I've had to 'want' to..
control it as opposed to having the booze control me..I had to see how it was controlling my body, urges, appetites, and budget..But the 'main' thing that caught my attention was seeing my bare gut one day in the mirror and being disgusted with myself..I'm not sure that people can be helped until they are really fed-up with themself and motivated to make personal life changes..

4. I partied so much in Iowa City
(It's not just alcohol there, folks) that I blanked out about two weeks. And imbibed way before that there and way after that. It was more fun in the Sixties. My blank-out was a despair reaction after Nixon was elected. A fun town for drinking etc but....yeah... I quit too a long time ago. Wrote a memoir about that time too, semiautobiographical fiction.

5. I'm not sure if this contributes to the numbers but...
Iowa is a dry campus. Thus, any students living in residence halls are immediately referred to alcohol-related counseling when they have been found violating that policy in any way. In contrast, UNI isn't a dry campus, so not all of the students who violate the residence hall alcohol policy are referred to alcohol-related counseling.
