Voters' anger, confusion grow

GOP phone calls warn listeners about 'shadowy' groups collecting absentee ballots.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anger, irritation and confusion among Iowa voters escalated Tuesday after thousands of Republicans received new phone messages implying that fraud might occur in the upcoming election.

Ed Failor Jr., executive director of the Republican get-out-the-vote effort called Victory '04, recorded the latest message calling two Democratic-leaning groups "shadowy organizations" and saying that giving them your absentee ballot will "jeopardize your vote."
(-snip-)
Failor's message, paid for by the Republican Party of Iowa, did not advocate destroying absentee ballots but warned about groups collecting the ballots.

"Shadowy organizations like ACT and MoveOn.org are working with the Democrats to collect absentee ballots," said the message (emphasis added.) "Do not give your ballot to anyone who is not officially credentialed by the Republican Party of Iowa. . . . Don't let these shadowy organizations jeopardize your vote."

Like the spoiled children they are, when they are losing the game by rules they themselves agree to, the Repiglicans stomp their feet, invent new rules and, when all else fails, take their ball and go home.

These people are no longer interested in the small-"d" democratic process.

1. Iowa
I fear Repukes are going to make our absentee ballots the "hanging Chad's" of this years elections. Their "reforms" were meant to be disqualify up to 10% of the absentee ballots filed. They know this is the heart of the Democratic vote. And why else would they be begging their voters not to vote absentee?

We better have lawyers ready to fight here in Iowa. It is going to get ugly here if our electoral votes are close.

2. I volunteered
To pick up the ballots around here. I know this message will make most people angry. Some of the older ones may be scared. At least I don't look shadowy. This makes me very angry and now I am going to do more to help the democratic party!

3. Here's a suggestion
If you don't subscribe to the Des Moines Register, click on the link, download and print the story and pass it round your county Democratic headquarters.

4. Registered courier here
Picked up 5 absentee requests mostly from older folks today. All said they are afraid the republicans are going to do something to steal the election in Iowa and they want to make sure their vote counts. Turned in @ 20 Kerry votes ( I assume) this weekend.

5. Another certified ballot courier here....
most of the people I've picked ballots up from are worried that their vote won't count and doing it this way is the best way they have to make sure it does count. While I think, generally speaking, we here in Iowa got a pretty clean system, we do need to be vigilant. The repukes can't hold on to power through the force of their ideas or the measurably poor performance of their governance, so they are left with these tawdry tactics. It is shameful un-American behavior that will degrade both their party and the process of democracy...it is up to us to stand firm and watchful.
