Money, Money, Money - Braley vs. Whalen (DMR)
http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060718/NEWS09/60718007/1056

Braley, Whalen draw donations from around U.S. in House race

<snip>

Braley has received $5,000 from a political action committee affiliated with former Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota and $3,000 from another one associated with Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin. Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner contributed $5,000 from his committee.

As for Whalen, he received $10,000 from a committee connected with House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois, $10,000 from another associated with Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, and $5,000 from the Hawkeye PAC run by Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley.
Vice President Dick Cheney headlined a reception Monday evening to boost Whalen, whose campaign finance reports filed over the weekend show that he raised $324,000 between May 18 and June 30.

That includes a $65,000 loan that Whalen made to his own campaign and $53,000 from a Washington committee formed to help raise money for Whalen.

Braley’s campaign finance reports show that he raised about $253,000 during the same period. Braley reported $130,000 cash in the bank, while Whalen said he had about $215,000.

1. From hotlineblog via DKOS:
GOPers say the Dems have bought time in Cedar Rapids, IA (IA 01 and 03), Denver (CO 07), Philadelphia (PA 06, 07, 08), Miami and West Palm Beach (FL 22), Hartford (CT 02, 04, 05), Albuquerque (NM 01), Tucson (AZ 08) and all the markets (Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Evansville, Lexington, Louisville, Cincinnati and Charleston) that broadcast into IN 08, IN 09 and KY 04.
========================================================================================
I am kind of surprised they didn't include IA-02(Loebsack)in there. Soon I hope.
Braley and Whalen are the #1 race in the country. Makes me wonder - How are the voting machines in that district? Hackable?

2. There were no complaints during the primary
Maybe that doesn't mean anything - however the Dem. primary WAS very close.

3. Optical scan in DBQ
I voted on an optical scan ballot and they did have an electronic black box available. I didn't hear about any problems in DBQ county, but I thought Braley's lead didn't come until the end because the modems in Waterloo (Black Hawk County) weren't working to tally from the precincts, so the vote totals weren't reported until they actually delivered them to the county office.

Anybody know more details? Am I remembering correctly?

On a side note, when I looked down and saw DIEBOLD on the machine I sure didn't feel confident.

5. Both optical scan and black box voting in Black Hawk
I voted black box just to see what it was like - saw a 'receipt' printed w/my votes on it so thought all was a-okay until Cornfield told me that the receipts cannot be used in a recount :crazy: like that makes any sense.

Yeah, the problems in Black Hawk were only about the modems - things not working properly in order to get vote totals uploaded, not any vote count/vote total issues. And that made Black Hawk's reporting take FOREVER.

W/CF Courier article on it:
