91. Andover has many interesting facets
They survived two Bushes at Phillips, raised Jay Leno (Andover High '68), was the "home town" of Spenser for Hire while he was filming in Boston, hosted Matt Damon at the 5K run this past Thanksgiving, is a frequent stop-off of Desmond Tutu (who is friends with a minister living there)...

The town government sucks, though. That Town Meeting crap is past its prime; the community is too large to support that type of system anymore, and there are many incompetents running the joint--the school system is a total disaster; there is more infighting between the teacher's union and that awful superintendent than is healthy. Things that were once free, like bus rides to school, music, sports, are all pay as you go. The taxes are onerous, especially for the older residents who bought their houses years ago when they were affordable. They just this past year went around and revaluated all of the geezer homes so they would not qualify for the MA elderly circuit breaker credit, in effect, taxing the geezers an additional eight or nine hundred bucks a year. Also, their sleazy tactic of calling the old Rolling Green Hotel "affordable housing" so they can build more McMansions is disgraceful. IMHO....

Andover needs to get its shit together. The good aspect of the town (increased diversity, which did not exist thirty or forty years ago) is being crushed by an inability of the town leadership to curb spending. Secret school committee meetings? Why do they need a new safety center? They've torn down two police stations and rebuilt them just since the 70's. I think half of them are "on the take."

And the Andover Townsman--once an independent New England voice, is now owned by the same rabid assholes who own the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune. Pity, that....

* The least number of divorces in the entire nation!

* One of the lowest out-of-marriage birth-rates in the entire nation!

* One of the highest per capita incomes in the entire nation!

* The best damn colleges and public schools in the entire nation!

* The lowest gun violence in the entire nation!

* The strongest gun control laws in the entire nation!

* The most educated population in the entire nation!

* Overall, the best damn state to raise kids!

"Newton, Massachusetts has been rated the safest place in America of cities that are 75,000 or more population."
"Based on statistics reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Newton was the nation's safest city during 2003. The designation is based on crime statistics in six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and auto theft." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton,_Massachusetts

46. I forgot to mention
That Somerville is the site of the first American flag flown anywhere, on January 1, 1776, by order of George Washington. It was the "United Colonies" flag, with 13 stripes, and a Union Jack in the corner.

It also contains part of the route of Paul Revere's ride. The part of what is now Broadway that he took before veering off to Medford (to avoid British sentries who started chasing him) was called Winter Hill Road at the time.

It also contains the Powderhouse, which was raided by the British in 1774; they took hundreds of kegs of gunpowder back to Boston.

57. This thread needs Jonathan Richman's Roadrunner
another Massachusetts anthem.

Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive past the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on
I'm in love with Massachusetts
And the neon when it's cold outside
And the highway when it's late at night
Got the radio on
I'm like the roadrunner

Alright
I'm in love with modern moonlight
128 when it's dark outside
I'm in love with Massachusetts
I'm in love with the radio on
It helps me from being alone late at night
It helps me from being lonely late at night
I don't feel so bad now in the car
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the Roadrunner
That's right

Said welcome to the spirit of 1956
Patient in the bushes next to '57
The highway is your girlfriend as you go by quick
Suburban trees, suburban speed
And it smells like heaven(thunder)
And I say roadrunner once
Roadrunner twice
I'm in love with rock & roll and I'll be out all night
Roadrunner
That's right

Well now
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive to the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on at night
And me in love with modern moonlight
Me in love with modern rock & roll
Modern girls and modern rock & roll
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
O.K., now you sing Modern Lovers

(Radio On!)
I got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the car, got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the AM sound, got the
(Radio On!)
Got the rockin' modern neon sound
(Radio On!)
I got the car from Massachusetts, got the
(Radio On!)
I got the power of Massachusetts when it's late at night
(Radio On!)
I got the modern sounds of modern Massachusetts
I've got the world, got the turnpike, got the I've got the, got the power of the AM
Got the, late at night, (?), rock & roll late at night
The factories and the auto signs got the power of modern sounds
Alright

Right, bye bye!

70. Fitchburg/ Leominster area I'm guessing?
The big chair, you got that right.

Gardner's known for about three things...

The big chair...

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/set/CIVIchair.html

A portion of the movie "School Ties" was filmed here

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105327/

This is the diner that was used in the scene.

It's was also the hometown of Haddasah Leibermein, Joe's wife. She even used to work for my dad. We got a visit from her and Tipper back in 2000--back when Holy-joe was considered one of the good guys...

Sigh...

On the dark side, we have a lot of Dino state reps. in this area. And Gardner is shamefully famous for having one asshole Mayor who liked to touch forbidden fruits and one priest who's also couldn't keep his hands to himself.

But, otherwise, it could be a good area.

But grew up in Rockport, and now live in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Not really by choice, it's where the rent was cheapest. (Even though it's one of the snobbiest areas on the North Shore).

It's an extremely Republican town, but for the first time this past Nov. 2, the Democratic candidate beat the Republican :D. We also passed the patriot act resolution too, back in April - which amazed me.

Nice to meet everyone :hi:
