Goodbye John Kerry Bumper Sticker! |
|
It has been six months since YOU lost the election to you-know-who. Your latest gambit into gay marriage has done it for me. You do not have my support any longer. Therefore, the Kerry/Edwards sticker is coming off....Right after I type this note.
In its place will proudly go a Deval Patrick for Governor sticker. John Kerry, check out Deval Patrick's stands on the issues. He is a true Democrat and hopefully will be our next governor.

I did take my bumpersticker off - a few months after the election, for I got replacement stickers - that were issue or organization oriented:
I have:
a Democracy for America sticker,
a democraticunderground.com sticker, and a
a pfaw.org sticker (People for the American way - great job publicizing the judiciary battle facts).
This latest stance of Kerry's is a bit disappointing, but I believe we are a big tent. I just am in the progressive wing of the Democratic party.

3. Not sure John Kerry has changed positions on Gay Marriage |
|
Always pushed full partnership/family and financial rights for gay couples and full legal rights Civil Unions blah blah blah.
But that Catholic thing in his background hung him up on Gay Marriage.
Personally I want to ban all marriage, cuz I am getting tired of listening to people complain about their spouses. :toast:

10. Here here I'm down with that! |
|
Ban ALL Marriage, just keep it all between you and your significant other, even as a Catholic I completely despise this concept that we must tow the religious line and be "joined under God" in order to reap what little benefits officially married couples get to enjoy.

6. "Goodbye John Kerry Haters" |
|
I have no use for anyone who attack Democrats. If you don't believe everything that any one Democrat believes, then run for office yourself. Otherwise, you guys will never be happy.
It's truly pathetic.

7. Did I say I hated John Kerry? |
|
No, I did not. PLease do not put words in my mouth. John Kerry is one of my senators. Ted Kennedy is the other. They are as different as night and day. John Kerry would have made an excellent president. He lost. Ted Kennedy reflects MY values much, much more than John Kerry ever will, or would.
This is basically a catharic move for me, the "moving on" as they say. I was really hard to take the sticker off. Kerry's words the last few days have just made it easier to remove the sticker.
Pathetic? Seems to me that the only ones who truly bashed Kerry were FReepers and disruptors in disguise. They are all over DU...aren't they?

we wouldn't want to seem too democratic :sarcasm:
Listen: when John Kerry belittles my life and relationship, he is attacking me. I am a democrat. I guess you now have no time for John Kerry, since he is an "anyone" who attacks Democrats.
Buh bye. You're right it is pathetic.

I don't think Kerry has belittled you or your relationship. If you want attacks, check out the Bush admin.

Kerry has very clearly been against "gay marriage", and for second class citizenship in the form of civil unions. If he is unable to make the case for civil marriage at the federal level (divorced from marriage in the church), he's not doing anything for me. He hasn't changed his position, and I haven't changed my opinion of his leadership on the topic.
I'm not a Kerry hater. The world is not that black and white. I certainly don't think he was the best candidate, and for the record if we get another one like him I won't waste my time and money this time.
I want real political leadership. I want a candidate who is on fire and who can excite us as democrats, someone who has real charisma. I want someone who can smack down these idiots, and someone who is not necessarily bound by "senate decorum" because we get our ass beat just by being polite. And I want a REAL progressive, not Bush Lite.
Yes, I want a divider. We're already divided. I just want someone to stand up and own the breach and start defining the agenda rather than letting Rove define it, or our very own fragile center. I want someone who can pitch hope rather than war, and who can call a tyrant a tyrant, even if that tyrant is the current president of the united states.

I sure understand your frustration and love the last paragraph of your post. . .
OTOH I think you may underestimate Kerry's career long work on GBLT issues. But what do I know? I just realized I wandered into the Mass forum by mistake! ;-)

9. There are too many who misstate Kerry's actual words and his position. |
|
Edited on Mon May-09-05 03:12 PM by blm
He only said that he didn't THINK there was consensus in the Democratic party in GENERAL to put gay marriage into the platform.
That's it. It's being blown out of proportion and bears no recognition to the years of Kerry's work on issues for gay rights and his ACTUAL, longheld position.
Kerry thinks that gay marriage as an issue will never be resolved until the RELIGIOUS aspect is made completely separate from the CIVIL form and done so in detailed legal language (airtight and argumentproof).
This was NOT done in Roe v wade, as Ruth Bader-Ginsburg has pointed out, and that is why the right continues to bring anti-abortion cases into the courts.
Language is part of the problem. I think ALL unions should be civil unions with the religious aspect covered in a separate event opted for AFTER the civil requirements are met. But, with marriage held as a 'sacrament' to most religions, that requires heavy, deliberative work by the lawmakers to separate the two.

20. iI's not just "gays" sir. Many gay activists know exactly what Kerry means |
|
because they are familiar with his decades of advocacy for them. I wouldn't single out "gays" as being the ones over-reacting to this story.
The problem is the way the media takes out only a few chosen words guaranteed to relate a certain picture, while ignoring the many layers of this discussion that have been raised over the years, many times by Kerry.

Looks like Kerry is being held to a higher standard than the others. It's sad that he can get more respect elsewhere but none in his own back yard. Sad, sad, sad.
