OLVER BLASTS PRESIDENT'S BUDGET FOR ABANDONING PROGRAM THAT SERVES MOST VULNERABLE CITIZENS
Elimination of Community Service Block Grants Would Devastate Local Anti-Poverty Efforts
Joins 140 Members of Congress Formally Rebuking President

WASHINGTON, D.C. ‚ Congressman John W. Olver (D-1st District) strongly criticized the presidentís FY07 budget proposal for eliminating Community Service Block Grants (CSBG), a federal program that provides essential, basic services, such as job placement and emergency food assistance, for millions of low-income families.

"I am a staunch supporter of CSBG, which funds our local anti-poverty agencies in their efforts to provide basic and essential services for some of our most vulnerable citizens, our children and elderly and low income individuals. and those displaced by hurricanes," Congressman Olver said. "I will continue to fight to restore funding for CSBG during the budget process."

and you're miles and miles from your nice, warm bed,

Enter area Congressman John Olver, winner of our association's 1999 Legislative Achievement Award. Rep. Olver, who served this region first as a state senator, recognized that much of the area lacked mobility choices, and that residents were having trouble getting to jobs and accessing medical services. As a member of the House Transportation Appropriations Committee, he was also aware of CTAA's work on the Joblinks project. He asked us to help. Barbara Singleton, our associate director, provided much of our response to this request.

On Friday, October 8, Rep. Olver, Singleton and hundreds more were on hand to celebrate the launching of several new transportation initiatives designed to enhance mobility along the Route 2 corridor of Massachusetts (roughly, from Greenfield east to the Gardner-Winchendon areas). Specifically, a new bus system linking Gardner and Greenfield was announced.

The new system, dubbed Link is a carefully coordinated product of the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority, the Franklin Regional Transit Authority, the local business community, human service organizations, colleges and educational organizations and our association. And though it may seem like a simple straight-line route between the two cities, the new service promises to link locally to other transit services in Fitchburg and even regional centers like Worcester and Boston.

PDA Supports and Is Working for Rep. Olver Re-Election

Rep. John Olver

March 5, 2006--Rep. John Olver represents the 1st District in Massachusetts, and is running for re-election this November. Olver has faithfully served the people of Massachusetts since his election to the state Senate in 1973. In 1991, he was sworn in to the U.S. House of Representatives, and has been a stalwart progressive in Congress ever since. Olver has stood resolutely against the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

After meeting with a PDA delegation in early February, Olver decided to stand as co-sponsor of H. Res. 635, first put forth by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI). This resolution would create a select committee to investigate the Bush Administration's decision to go to war before congressional authorization, its manipulation of pre-war intelligence, its encouragement and countenance of torture, and its retaliation against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment.
