The Third Congressional District - Kent, Ionia, and Barry Counties

(except a sliver of northwestern Kent)

Does anyone else live here?

Our rather moderate 70-year old Republican Congressman, Vern Ehlers, often gets 2/3 of the vote against Democrats who rarely have much political recognition. Many of his supporters are Democrats who cross over and vote for him.

He is almost guaranteed to win this November 2. After that, though, I doubt he will run in 2006.

If he retires in 2006, and either State Rep. Michael Sak, former Rep. and now Judge Steven Pestka, or GR Mayor George Heartwell run as a Democrat, I think they might have a real shot at winning (albeit a small one), especially if Glenn Steil, Sr., or someone named DeVos or Van Andel runs for the Repubs. They would get a good number of 'Ehlers Democrats,' if you will.

Again, it would be tough, but who knows?
