We need to amend this section of the state Constitution.
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 07:42 PM by Michigander4Dean
Article IX, Sec. 7

No income tax graduated as to rate or base shall be imposed by the state or any of its subdivisions.

So, unlike a majority of the states, we can't have those tax breackets, huh? Thus, my parents pay the same rate of their income as Betsy DeVos.

I'm thinking if you make more than $100,000 a year, you should pay a little more, say, 5%. If you make less than a certain amount per year - say, $20,000 per year - you shouldn't pay anything at all.

It's too late to do it in 2004, but maybe we can try to amend the Constitution in 2006 or 2008.

1. I agree wholeheartedly. The flat tax is terrible.
It's extremely regressive. I also agree with your $20,000 exemption. Toss in about $5000 per child, and you have the start of a pretty fair tax system. A progressive bracket system would also be better.

3. We need just TWO things to accomplish this:
The Michigan State House, and the Michigan State Senate. We need to concentrate on getting those two tools to help accomplish our other goals.

4. Or we can also go by initiative.

We would need 10% of the total number of people who voted in the last gubernatorial election (317,757) to sign a petition.

Our chances look kind of long either way, but again, we have a couple years.
