http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/4867322.htmlWASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a sign that Patty Wetterling's DFL bid for Congress is getting more respect on Capitol Hill, Republican incumbent Mark Kennedy has been identified as one of 39 GOP candidates who will share $1 million in special donations organized by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).
The group, called the Million Dollar Club, includes 25 incumbents who could face strong challenges and who have been singled out for help by NRCC chairman Tom Reynolds of New York.
Until now, few observers had considered Kennedy to be vulnerable.
Wetterling, who became a crusader for missing children after her son Jacob was abducted in 1989, has raised $350,000 in the two months since she decided to run against Kennedy. While that's far short of the $965,000 that Kennedy has in the bank, her fundraising prowess as a novice politician has impressed Democrats.
"There is no question that the race in the Sixth Congressionial District is one that will go to the wire," said Minnesota DFL chairman Michael Erlandson. "Wetterling has 100 percent name ID, and it's 100 percent positive."
The Kennedy campaign minimized the significance of Reynolds' help.
