I HATE Twin Cities radio. |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 09:50 PM by northwest
If you're a rock fan and only want to listen to rock music (like me), Minneapolis is NOT the city to live in. No offense, but I can't WAIT to go back to Fargo in four weeks. Thank GOD I only live in this city three months out of the year. 93X (Minneapolis's ONLY rock station) is a virus on society. They're a Disney-owned musical corporate butt-rock TRASH HEAP. Drive 105 (alternative) plays nothing but WUSS ROCK and KQRS (classic rock) is not much better.
I have no interest in listening to news radio, talk radio, public radio, pop radio, Spanish radio, etc. 770 Radio K (the U of M station) doesn't play the type of music I like most of the time. I just want a nice good rock station (that doesn't play too much corporate butt-rock and doesn't repeat their damn songs) to listen to instead of 93X which has about 8 brand new songs and 8 other Metallica songs on their playlist, and plays them over and over again ad nauseum.
As a pizza delivery driver, I'm always fidling with the dial, because there's always something crappy being played on one station, then something even worse on another station, and the cycle continues on and on. Most of my job involves me driving in my car, and I can't take it when all the radio stations SUCK. I'm SICK and TIRED of hearing the same damn Three Days Grace song over and over again. It's stuck in my head, for chrissakes...
I'm sorry, but I really have to say that the radio in this city really SUCKS. Thank God I'm moving back to Fargo soon so I can listen to the greatest radio station in the world, Q98. I hate Minneapolis. I have lots of other reasons than just the shitty radio.
Rant over.

4. Drive105 is what I spend the most time on. |
|
I miss the salad days when I could just hop between 93:The Edge and REV105.
Or for a real throwback, when 104.1 was KJJO Modern Rock. Lord that was more than 12 years ago now.

6. Worst. Day. In. TC. Radio. EVER. |
|
My band (at the time) had just put out a CD, and had been played on one of the local late-nite shows on Rev. We were working on getting played more often when C(r)apitol Cities/ABC bought them.
What a terrible, awful day. I think I may have even cried. The great underground commercial radio experiment was over, and once again, the commercial airwaves turned immediately to crap once again.
I don't even bother with music radio anymore. Maybe I'm getting old, but I haven't actually heard anything remotely interesting in rock music since the mid-90s. Most of it seems like neoGrungeMetal done by overbodypierced college dropouts who spent too much time listening to Nirvana and Metallica in high school. Bleh.
Nowdays, it's either MPR or KFAI. Or more music from my fairly extensive CD collection, or one of the ultra-mega-mega-mix CDs I make for my wife.
It's tough getting old.
:D

KJJO was pretty kewl then. I was in college, so the timing was perfect in many ways.
Unfortunately, they did try to be all things to all people. For every cool new underground group I heard, they would also play A Flock of Seaguls-- :wtf:
Anyway it's much better than what we have today.

8. I listen to drive 105 whenever I'm in Minneapolis. As for "wuss rock", |
|
you're entitled to your opinion but I'd have to disagree. I also like 770 AM Radio K. However, I do agree about the Three Days Grace song. To me, they are just another manufactured, bland rock band. Best of luck in Fargo. If you have a good station in Fargo, you're lucky. Radio here in Sioux Falls, SD (with very few exceptions) really sucks. It's all monopolized.

17. KRRO (rock) is pretty good, I hear. |
|
They play some of the crap that 93X plays, but I heard it's OK.
Not as good as Q98, tho. :)

9. I rarely listen to the radio |
|
I hate morning shows. I want tunes, not talk.
Would be nice if you could get internet radio in the car, but until that's possible, I just listen to tapes.

11. You can get satellite radio in the car |
|
which is pretty similar to internet radio. No commercials, no annoying morning shows, and a wide variety of music.

13. I always have trouble getting their signal, and I live in Minneapolis... |
|
Plus I'm usually at work when they're on the air. I'm impressed with the little I have heard of them, though.

15. Try Radio K at 106.5 fm |
|
It comes in well in St. Louis Park, western Uptown.

16. I thought 106.5 was KDXL, the SLP High School station. |

Yeah, it is. On school days, the High School broadcasts between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and Radio K uses the frequency the rest of the time. Now that it's summer I think it's all Radio K.

12. And Clear Channel owns half the damn city, right down to the billboards... |
|
I even have pretty mainstream taste in music, but I was shocked at the state of radio when I first came here. Occassionally I put on Drive 105 or Cities 97, but usually I just listen to CDs. Also, how sad is it that I've never even heard Bjork on a radio station around here? :grr:

WOW! They play Bjork on the radio?
Why yes, I have never listened to radio outside of the Cities. My 20GB Rio Karma and tape adapter are all I need.

19. My wife's in advertising sales, and they're feeling the ClearChannel bite |
|
CC has all the advertising rights to the new development at 7th St & Hennepin in downtown Mpls, and is spreading like a cancer across the city. Thank you very much, 1996 Telecom Act.
