Republican Party asks Minneapolis to bid for '08 convention
http://twincities.bizjournals.com/twincities/stories/2006/02/13/daily31.html

Minneapolis is one of 31 cities the Republican National Committee (RNC) has asked to bid for its 2008 convention.

The RNC presented requests for proposals to the cities on Tuesday. The requests include an outline of the specifications for hosting the convention and ask for preliminary information to help the committee evaluate interested cities.

RNC Site Selection Committee plans to hold individual meetings with representatives from all interested cities in Washington, D.C., to discuss convention criteria, logistics and the site selection process.

In addition to Minneapolis, the other cities asked to bid were: Anaheim, Calif.; Atlanta; Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Memphis, Tenn.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento, Calif.; St. Louis; San Antonio; San Diego; San Francisco; Seattle; and Tampa, Fla.

1. I'm conflicted. I hate the idea of my city all infested with Republicans.
On the other hand, this very blue city can be counted on to stage massive and excellent protests. I'm SO on it if those fuckknobs decide to hold their hatefest here.

3. 'fucknobs?' come to think of it that's a great word for those people..
...I think it's a new one on me and I thought I knew every profanity there was....
...anyway, yes. we'd be obliged to stage some massive and creative demonstrations if they come here.
...remember, this state gave Mikhail Gorbachev a warmer welcome that it gave George H.W. Bush in the same year...
...we'd have to be wary for the appearance of the Brooks Brothers rioters though.
....the college republican types have been making real assholes of themselves lately...

4. Ahhhh but thats the whole idea
They probably think its a good way to stimulate Repub affinity here.
But the City itself NOT purple, so should this happen, it should be interesting to participate in what happens LOL.

5. Every city listed up there is blue through and through
The rural areas are overall more red than blue in many areas (though all some shade of purple).

stand in our way.

Of course, if Northwest Airlines shut down, they may not be able to have it here because there won't be easy way to get here (unless some other airline uses us as a hub). I heard on the news last night that, if the pilots do strike, all the other airlines serving MSP combined won't have enough seats available to pick up the volumne of passengers NWA flies out of here.

12. Great, let 'em come
Mpls should impose a special 300% sales tax just for the days of the convention - maybe it will help recoup all revenue the city has lost thanks to republican cuts in local gov't aid. I say let 'em come and we'll shake 'em down for every dime they bring with 'em. That, coupled with some strategic sick-outs in the hotel and restaraunt industries should leave an unpleasnt surprise for them in the proverbial punchbowl.

14. I like the way you think.
But wouldn't that be a "fee" instead of a "tax." Then again, Pawlenty will be gone by then so I guess it won't matter. If the Repugs have their convention here and you want to protest them, Twin Cities residents can expect to take a few days off work because the "free speech" zone will probably be located in Duluth. Or Canada.

Fuckknobs. LOL! Good one Ocelot. That's perfect!

20. Imagine the stench of their rotting souls and moldy hearts...
during July in Mpls!

I can't imagine Pawlenty turning down this opportunity for attention and, based on the Progress for America ads, Minnesota is a high priority for the Rethugs. Hopefully, he won't have much actually power in making the decision.

BTW, when I was doing a little research on PfA yesterday, I was looking at a conservative web site (can't remember which one, but I can check my history if anyone wants to know) that had a poll question about possible Rethug presidential candidates. The list was long (maybe 10 names) and Pawlenty was on it. (Coleman, wasn't.)

21. I think this was why Rove and Cheney demanded that
Pawlenty to run for Governor and Coleman to run for Senate. Colman is such a snake oil salesman, his presidential prospects weren't has "hopeful" as Pawlenty's.

22. You're probably right. And, unfortunately, Pawlenty....
could have just the right blend of piety, modesty and dullness to contrast with the wild-west arrogance of BushCo.

23. Do they remember the last one?
They booked ALL the hotel rooms way in advance and then canceled all of the the day before. Local businesses LOST money. Security cost a fortune. Security was such a bitch that nobody from the convention ventured out shopping, dining etc and locals could not get around and there was a general round up of "undesirables" the week before.

Why would any city want to host this?
