How's our biotech sector doing lately? |
|
I'm a fairly recent college grad with a degree in Biotech and a minor in Chemistry, but I'm having a really difficult time finding a company willing to hire someone without previous experience. This is in spite of the internship I did for a year under my professor (guess that's not good enough anymore). I've talked with my professors and with recruiters from job placement companies, and what I keep hearing is that the poor economy of the past two years forced a lot of lab techs to be laid off. These lab techs are now accepting entry-level jobs at lower pay simply to have any kind of income at all. That means I not only have to compete against fellow college grads, but experienced lab techs willing to work for the same pay!
Can the biotech field really be this bad? It's really discouraging to keep getting passed over again and again.

I'm about to get my PhD, and It's freakin' brutal. I've been looking all over the country, experience is key. Unfortunatley, i don't have any industrial experience. I would really like to get a job doing process development for a pharma or biotech company, but I may have to settle for being a lab rat somewhere. *sigh*
Things will be better after November...if all our jobs aren't in India by then.
