Minneapolis March makes it on www.michaelmoore.com website
It was a very good march. There were more students than we have ever seen. There is a high school group that started last year called Youth Against War And Racisim. High Schools are organizing all over the metro. They started at the recruiting station on Lyndale and walked over to the rally at Hennepin and Lagoon to join the march, there was about 100 of them with their own banners, flags, and posters. They made the older people cry when they came up. The speeches were excellent. Sami who just came back from Iraq spoke of the devistation there and why we need to get out.
There were so many people video taping for independent news internet site. I don’t know who they are so don't know the sites.
I'm attacking a blog site of a friend w/their pictures. See at the bottom
Poor coverage on the news and newspaper.
There was a reporter from channel 5 and I pointed out Family Member Speak Out Against the War.. They had a huge professional banner, and t-shirts. There were about 40 of them. With posters and pictures of their loved ones.. They also carried a casket with a flag draped over, and a casket painted black with baby shoes on it to reflect civlilans. I also pointed out the president of veterans for peace and asked the report to interview him instead of the crazy 'hippies" He said he would over at the rally. He interviewed an Korean Veteran of Vets for Peace.. A man who goes to the homeless shelter and tt Vets every week. Anyhow, that never made the news. Instead Channel 5 started the report with " Anti War march in Uptown was an hour long and stopped traffic and created chaos.,…but police said everything went well." . He then interviewed people angry with the being stuck as we went by.
http://kstp.com/article/stories/S380142.shtml?cat=206 The reporter, Tim Sherno, is the one I asked to interview a Military Family who has a loved in Iraq or a Veteran.. Instead he interviewed people stuck in traffic for 15 minutes. 5 years later and the main news still doesn't cover what is really going on.
It still amazes me.. 5 years later and they still have to spin the news. And not give any voice to the Veterans or Famlies who speak out. It hearts my heart.. Especially for those who loved ones are their right now. They should be given a voice.
Here is my friend's friend's website with pictures of the march
http://silencedmajority.blogs.com/silenced_majority_portal/2008/03/iraq-war-5th-ye.html Iraq War 5th year: Twin Cities Protest
We can't believe it has been five years that the US has been in iraq. The war and occupation has lasted longer than WW II and there is no end in sight. The people of the Twin Cities showed their displeasure by taking to the streets. Nearly 2000 persons protested and their unique signs and mostly solemn faces tell the whole story. Not surprisingly, I didn't see any signs declaring that "war is romantic", which is what George W. Bush said the other day. Instead, I saw signs that were critical of torture, killing of innocent civilians, and crony capitalism. Those are the kinds of things that Barack Obama's preacher was complaining about; that doesn't sound like the rhetoric of a "crazy uncle" to me. He sounds like a man of the cloth.
Strib had the rally covered but they used a high-powered telephoto lens to take the crowd shot which made it look smaller than it was, The Strib quoted the police and the rally organizers for estimates of the crowd size and cited both. I don't know how the police made their estimate, but the organizers used counters and had at least two persons clicking as persons walked by. I know because they were on the bridge with me as I captured images of the crowd.
