Poll: Good news for Coleman, bad for Franken
The Republican senator appears ahead of all DFLers. Franken's tax woes seem to have weakened him, and he did as well as Ciresi.

By KEVIN DIAZ, Star Tribune

Republican Sen. Norm Coleman holds a seven-point lead over his DFL challenger Al Franken, who appears to have been weakened by his recent tax problems.

A new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll also shows that Mike Ciresi, the DFL trial lawyer who dropped out of the race in March for lack of support from his party's delegates, runs just about as strong against Coleman as Franken does.

Coleman enjoys a commanding 15-point lead over lesser-known Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, who is facing Franken in next month's DFL endorsing convention.

The telephone survey conducted last week shows Coleman attracting the support of 51 percent of registered voters, compared with 44 percent for Franken. In a hypothetical contest between Coleman and Ciresi, Coleman wins 51 percent to 43 percent. Against Nelson-Pallmeyer, Coleman's edge is 53 percent to 38 percent.

In what has been considered one of the most competitive Senate races in the nation, Coleman still shows some potential vulnerabilities, with a 45 percent overall job approval rating among all Minnesota adults in the poll.

1. MEANINGLESS!!!
For crying out loud the race between the two has yet to even start. We dont even know if Al will be the D candidate (although I hope he is). Who cares about these polls???!!! Lets see how Normy the water carrier is doing after 3 months of campaigning in which he is tied to idiot George like stink on a monkey! He's carried water for the last 8 years, nothing else. That will become obvious over the next 5 months.

3. Another Star Tribune poll shows MN "solidly Democratic" in Presidential race (50% D to 38% R)
That's bound to help. When it comes right down to it, are Obama voters really going to cross over to the other side of the ballot and vote for Norm Coleman?

Poll: A state in play? So far, it's solidly Democratic

Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton enjoy comfortable leads over Republican John McCain in Minnesota, a state widely expected to be a hard-fought battleground in November.

A new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll found that Obama leads McCain 51 percent to 38 percent among the state's registered voters. Clinton leads the Arizona senator 49 percent to 40 percent...

4. I doubt it!
This Senate race may be close but Al is going to win it. Coleman has nothing.

6. How will the tens of thousands of new, Obama-inspired voters go?
That might skew things in a way the polls don't show very well.

7. Meh. Al's going to clean Coleman's clock
As soon as he's able to talk to the Minnesota public in the general election. Right now he's concentrating on the nomination.

10. It's May, few are paying attention yet
Although the '08 Presidental campaign has been going since ... well, '05, few people outside the hardcore bases and the media have been paying attention to other races.

That the incumbent has a seven point lead this far out should have Norm and the Republican party nervous. This is going to be an ugly race, with lots of out-of-state money and influence coming in to prop Norm up (Rove starts the parade of crooks and fools this weekend).

Norm may hit a double-digit come August because of the convention, the the real race will hit stride in September - and that when most voters will start paying attention and see Norm for what he truly is.
