5. racist slur for "Hmong"
the phonetic spelling of "Hmong", an ethnic group from Laos who have settled largely over Wisconsin and the Twin Cities area.

There was recentely a situation in NW Wisconsin where a Hmong hunter went on private property. When the owner of the property came by and asked him to leave with several friends, he opened fire, killing 6 and wounding 2, for reasons not entirely known yet. I suspect this is probably in reference to that, meaning we're probably going to see a lot of racist backlash :(

6. oh ugh!!!! horrible, vile...
and completely racist to the core...disgusting :puke:
the killer is probably claiming he was "afraid"...that what the guy who killed that japanese kid on halloween a few years ago somewhere down south claimed. that "defense" seems to work when the victims are 'colored.' disgusting...but thanks for sharing this. i hadn't heard about this case. the inhumanity of humanity never ceases to amaze me

14. Actually, it was the Hmong hunter who shot the white hunters, but
that doesn't excuse the racist decal. :-(

It's a messy situation, and I'm not sure exactly how it came about.

7. There are a lot of people around the country who do not know the Hmong.
There is a very large settlement of them also in Central CA. The Hmong fought for the US during the Viet Nam war in Laos and in Cambodia. They say our country promised that they would take care of them for fighting for us.

They were forgotten about by our government (surprise, surprise), but many refugees made their way first to CA, then to MN and WI. Their culture is VERY different from ours, and they have had a very difficult time finding a place to fit in with Americans.

An excellent book to read about the Hmong story is "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down." It's about a little Hmong girl in CA who has epilepsy, but it also tells of the Hmong's involvement in the Viet Nam war.

2. Educate me: What is a mung?
I saw a truck the other day with a rebel flag and bush/cheney sticker and a license plate that was also offensive and now I can't recall what is said.

8. That is so wrong
I hope you honked at him. I can't beleive they even allow that, I can't believe they allow southerners to fly the confederate flag. Its as if they really just don't understand that its wrong to degrade a living, breathing, human being into a horrible monster simply because of their ethnicity.
This is why I always reference hippies when talking about people who really helped the world. They battled against this trash. The real white trash are the conservative rascists, not the poor.

9. It says a lot about whoever came up with this bumper sticker
that they can't even spell Hmong correctly.

I don't suppose if the shooter's last name had been Johnson the jerk would have had a bumper sticker saying "shoot a Norske".

10. Yet another moran..... "mung"
At least those idiots are consistently unable to spell. I can't believe that somebody is cashing in on this tragedy. How utterly disgusting.

That's like making a bumper sticker saying "save an Iraqi-- shoot an American". UGH.

12. It was up by the mall here in Mankato
And I would say that since this is inciting violence it is not covered by the 1st amendment and could be legally forced to remove.

13. Darn right. It's a hate crime
and if anyone sees it again they should take down the license number and report it to the police.

17. this absolutely requires a response!
for starters, did you get a license number?
could you describe the truck and driver?

Minimally, I think you -- and maybe the rest of us -- should write to the Mankato Human Rights Commission and request some action, even if it's only of an educational nature.

A letter to the Mankato Free Press and the MSU Reporter (student paper) would also be worthwhile.

this kind of stuff cannot go unchallenged.
left unchallenged, it can only lead to dreadful trouble....

remember, there was grafitti painted on an Asian family's home in River Falls (I think -- that part of Wisconsin, anyway) a few days ago...."killer," it read.

something very ugly is building in our region and it has to be stopped....

and I have to say I lay some of the blame at the feet of Bush and his minions....the current mood of the country -- at least on the right -- is that it's "OK" to be racist again......Good God...

18. It is traced
to a custom bumper sticker store in Mankato. They said they will stop selling them.

http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/5135606.html

MANKATO, Minn. -- A local store that sells custom bumper stickers said it would stop selling one that advocates violence against the Hmong after a fatal shooting in Wisconsin.

The Custom Zone, a store in the River Hills Mall, has been selling a bumper sticker that reads, "Save a Hunter Shoot a Hmong," KEYC-TV reported Monday.

The slogan is a reference to last month's shooting in Wisconsin. St. Paul resident Chai Soua Vang, a Hmong man, has been charged with murdering six deer hunters after a dispute over a deer stand.

One shopper, Jessica Flatequal, told the station she complained to store management and was told the store sells many offensive items. She said she was then asked to leave the store.

Some local Hmong residents said the bumper stickers disturbed them.

Later on Monday, River Hills Mall managers issued a statement saying the store would stop selling the stickers.
