LL's shameless publicity thread
If you're tired of the well-worn Christmas carols of department store Muzak fame, come hear the Lessons and Carols Service at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, either 7:30 PM Friday, December 17, or 4:00 PM, Sunday, December 19.

Starring the (ahem!) superb cathedral choir and its genuine English director, as well as guest readers from throughout the community, this service is based on the Lessons and Carols Service from King's College, Cambridge, and features Christmas and Advent music that you probably haven't heard before.

If you show up after 5:30PM on Friday, you can get in on the wine (we are Episcopalians, after all) and cheese reception.

Admission is free and open to the public. :-)

at the corner of Hennepin and Oak Grove, facing Loring Park.

5. I thought the Lutherans were God's frozen people

And I ought to know. I used to be one. The Episcopalians are considerably thawed compared to Norwegian Lutherans. :-)

10. Thank goodness for that one lutefisk dinner I had at age 16!
I was lucky. My second-generation Norwegian father refused to eat the stuff, so we never had it at Christmas.

8. my sister-in-law (Episcopalian) calls herself
"God's frozen Chosen."

I still think that's Lutherans, but what do I know? I was Congregationalist.

9. No harps this year
We're not doing Britten's Ceremony of Carols, just a King's College-style Lessons and Carols with voices and organ. Isn't that enough?

A harp! Gee, you audiences want the moon! :-)

12. ooops. you're right.
I confabulated the two in what's left of my mind.

But I've moved enough harps in and out of St. Mark's over the years to make it an honest mistake. Plymouth Music Series used St. Mark's in 1975 for a "Jazz Worship Service," when Philip Brunelle gave Dave Brubeck several hymns to improvise on without having seen them in advance. The problem was the acoustics -- too reflective, too much echo -- ruined Brubeck's crisp playing. But they work great with voice.
