Private accounts already in place

As you note in a Dec. 16 editorial, "Private accounts may or may not be a good tool to help Americans save more for retirement. But they should supplement, rather than replace, Social Security."

There is already a federal program to encourage private savings: tax-free Roth IRAs.

We should not let George W. Bush change Social Security.

...and isn't it strange that, despite all the tax-deferred and tax-free accounts that have been created over the last 20 years, Americans are saving at record-low rates for their retirement?

You're absolutely right about Social Security. It's just a ploy by Wall Street to prop up the stock markets once the baby boomers start taking their money out of it.
