THAT is surprising to me. I would have said Mpls, hands down.

4. And I would have picked Eugene or Ashland for most liberal
city in Oregon, maybe even Portland.

6. Actually Rochester is a very red area.
But that is alright. My area "NW subs" is pretty red as well. But we will see if we can change that for '06!

7. but that's changing!
Rochester is turning blue before our very eyes - just look at the huge DFL gains down there in 2004.

8. When the Strib ran a series of articles on same sex marriage...
they noted that Golden Valley had a large number of families that were headed by gay couples. The article claimed that Golden Valley was the most "gay friendly" suburb in the Twin Cities.
Sorry, it was a while ago so I don't have a link.

9. Not suprising, really
I live in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood in Mpls, which is straight west of downtown, on either side of I-394. In other words, all that separates us from Golden Valley and St Louis Park is Theo. Wirth Park.

I would suspect that Bryn Mawr is the most gay-friendly neighborhood in Mpls-- maybe even moreso than Loring. I am literally surrounded by gay neighbors-- at one time, we only had one straight family directly next to us, the rest were gay/lesbian couples, most with kids, to boot. There's more out gays and lesbians in my neighborhood than anyplace else in Minneapolis, I'd wager. At least I don't have to worry about Michelle Bachmann moving in... :o

Also, the median age of my 'hood is older, and we have a 97% home ownership rate, so we get a lot of career-type professionals with families. Plus, real estate is also quite hard to come by (and some has gotten pricey in the last seven years or so), so it wouldn't suprise me any of there's a bit of "overflow" into Golden Valley (which is actually < 1/4 mile away from us).

Sometimes, statistics yield suprising information. Whouda thunk GV was gay-friendly?
