Senator Daschle served as a Representative and a Senator from South Dakota from 1979 to 2005. Over twenty-six years, the Democrat won seven statewide elections in a staunchly conservative state that hasn’t supported a Democrat for President in over four decades. Daschle was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 and served as both Senate Minority Leader (1995-2001; 2003-2005) and Senate Majority Leader (2001-2003). Only Lyndon Johnson served fewer years before being elected by his party to lead the Senate. Daschle also served as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy Committee from 1989 to 1999. Senator Daschle was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1947. He attended public and private schools and became the first person in his family to graduate from college, South Dakota State University, in 1969. Daschle served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1972. Following his military service, Daschle became an aide to then South Dakota Senator James Abourezk. He launched his own successful Congressional career by being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978.
Senator Daschle has joined the Washington, D.C. law firm Alston & Bird LLP as a public policy adviser in 2005.

I always hate it when I read about an event that I wanted to go to but did not know about via a newspaper story the day after.
