POLL RESULTS: If you can believe them, John Kerry now leads Bush in OHIO!
Edited on Thu May-13-04 11:21 PM by NEOBuckeye
Big news, my fellow Buckeyes and DUers. If you can go by the pollsters, looks like Ohio, our great s-w-i-n-g state, is making the big BLUE shift -- in John Kerry's favor. I think Ohioans are finally realizing that the Bush-led GOP is getting us nowhere fast.

Now if we can just break DIEBOLD and its voting machines...

Kerry Leads Bush Among Likely Voters in Ohio

John Kerry leads George W. Bush among likely voters in Ohio according to a survey by the American Research Group. A total of 49% of likely voters say they would vote for Kerry if the presidential election were being held today and 42% say they would vote for Bush. A total of 2% of likely voters say they would vote for Ralph Nader and 7% of likely voters are undecided.

In a race between just Kerry and Bush, Kerry is at 50%, Bush is at 43%, and 7% are undecided.

These results are based on 600 completed telephone interviews among a statewide random sample of likely voters in Ohio. Of the 600 likely voters, 38% consider themselves to be Republicans, 40% consider themselves to be Democrats, and 22% consider themselves to be independents. The interviews were conducted May 10 through 12, 2004. The theoretical margin of error for the total sample of 600 is plus or minus 4 percentage points, 95% of the time, on questions where opinion is evenly split.

2. Ohio "Paper Trail Petition"
Received an E-mail from Steve Bouchard, ACT (Americans Coming Together)-Ohio State Director

Just signed it. Please consider signing and pass it along:

Today I’ve taken action to protect the vote in Ohio, where electronic voting machines are set to be in place in 31 counties without a paper trail verification of each votes. The 2004 election is going to be very close - and could come down to just a handful of votes in this key state.

Please join me in signing the “Paper Trail Petition” today and pass it on to everyone you know.

4. low tech is the answer...
i'm still amazed how the uproar over verified or non-verified, paper trail or no...the paper trail is irrelevent...wont' be checked unless something's obviously out of whack. just b/c you have a slip of paper that says one thing doesn't mean the computer didn't count the vote as another.

the solution? low tech... huge-ass piece of butcher paper (hell, and easel and drawing paper would work too) hung on a wall...you check/X/fill in, whatever, the bubble or square next to your preferred choices, and then put the ballot in the locked box. when the polls are closed...we count the votes. difficult, i realize, but we managed to do it when i taught school on plenty of occasions. one person calls off the votes, the other person makes a tally mark under the correct column.

i realize this might mean that faux news and the other media whores might have to *gasp* wait a day or so for final results, but there would be infinately less chance of fraud, etc...everything's out in the open. cheap too.

6. I agree
"low tech is the answer". I just don't know if or see how all these electronic voting machines will get decertified in all the states in time for the presidential election.

In the meantime a paper receipt could at least be used to match against the electronic tally if the results are close. If the counts don't match then the receipt would prevail as the accurate count. If 30% of the states are planning to use electronic voting machines without a paper receipt then there will be no verification, case closed.

8. this false urgency of getting the results out is killing our democracy
The election workers want to go home early. Is that more important than having accurate vote counts?

I have said it before, but I am afraid of mistakes causing whole precincts to lose votes. That would be real convenient. Jeb Bush specialized in "creating problems" in the black precincts in Florida. It can be done with EVMs.

9. Thats a suprsingly good number for Kerry...
...especially since Bush has been targeting this state with a pretty heavy media campaign.

10. This points to the need for a heavy GOTV campaign to mobilize...
...this potential vote, and also voter registration.

11. Would registering at high school graduation ceremonies be considered tacky
? Register to vote or register for the draft--ok, that would be a creepy sign and freak the young people out. Nevertheless, I barely remember graduation. I would not know where to go. Maybe get a clipboard and mull about in the crowd. The staff might eject you, though.

12. I doubt they could eject you.
Seems like a good idea. The question remains, will they drag their asses to the polls?
