Bush quietly meets with Amish here; they offer their prayers
From the Lancaster paper:

By Jack Brubaker
Lancaster New Era

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - President Bush met privately with a group of Old Order Amish during his visit to Lancaster County last Friday. He discussed their farms and their hats and his religion.
He asked them to vote for him in November.

This story has not been reported before. You might think an observant press follows the president everywhere, especially during a re-election campaign, but no reporter attended this meeting.

Sam Stoltzfus, an Old Order historian and writer who lives in Gordonville, spoke with a number of people present at the session with the president.

<snip>

Stoltzfus reports: “It took a while to get them through the metal detectors as these were farmers and shop men, with vice grips, pocket knives, and nuts and bolts in their pockets. Some ladies had baby gear. All pockets had to be emptied.’’

When the Amish were “found not to be a serious threat to national security,’’ they were allowed inside the office area of Lapp Electric and waited about 30 minutes for the president to appear.

<snip>

Bush said he had never met any Amish before and was curious about why the men were wearing straw hats rather than black wool hats. The Amish explained that they wear cooler straw in summer. Bush tried on a hat.

<snip>

“One of the young girls wanted to give Bush a whoopie pie cookie,’’ Stoltzfus says. “Bush declined it. The Secret Service man took it, as presidents aren’t supposed to eat untested food.’’

At the end of the session, Bush reportedly told the group, “I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job.’’

3. I've heard that said about them, but didn't know if there was
any truth to it. Thanks!

I can only hope this group picked up on The Villiage Idiot's vibes.

5. He needs all the prayers he can get to cover his backside with
God. It is quite appalling to me as a Christian to have him continuously defiling our religion. He is going down..down...down.

8. Amen to that!
It scares the living daylights out of me that a meglomanic with a Messianic complex thinks he's some sort of conduit that God uses to spread His message.

I hope this country comes to its senses and throws this nut out lock, stock and barrel on November 2nd.

7. that reads like satire
Are you sure this is not from "The Onion"?

the Amish were “found not to be a serious threat to national security,’’

That war mongering son of a bitch has a lot of nerve showing up and campaigning in Amish country. Those people are pacifists. Somebody ought to write a scathing letter to some Pennsylvania newspapers about this.

11. The Amish do NOT VOTE!
Something is fishy here. Either he was talking to Mennonites or they have recently started voting. I was under the impression that the sect in Lancaster, PA was old order Amish.

Thanks for the reminder.

Guess somebody didn't do their job and give Junior a backgrounder before he made this little sojourn, LOL.

Why would the Amish even show up? They don't want anyone taking their picture. Were they paid to appear? Makes ya wonder....

15. Good question
My guess is they just wanted to meet the pResident and The Village Idiot, obviously knowing nothing about the Amish, had a hankering to meet up with them.

I was wondering, though, how the White House got the O.K. to meet with them. Somebody had to get permission from the elders, I would imagine.

16. I'm waiting for the day a couple of Amish ladies show up at my
store. It would make my week to sell a vibrator or dildo to an Amish woman. Not sure if that is against their beliefs or not.

17. Yikes, LOL! Don't know about THAT . . .
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 10:34 PM by Penndems
The Amish generally do business within their own community. If the need for a sex toy presented itself, it would have to be produced by -- and purchased in -- an Amish establishment, I would imagine.

(on edit: typo)

24. I knew a girl who worked at the Woolworth's in Lancaster
She told me that Amish girls would shop there for lingerie and that there were buggies rocking ;-)

Also back in 1998 there was that Cocaine trafficing ring made up of Amish youth.

26. Mennonites
Last week I was shocked in South Carolina at the sight of a Mennonite woman coming out of an auto parts store with a package and then driving away. Later I saw a group of Mennonite women having lunch at Subway. My host told me "the Mennonite garage" is the best car repair shop in town.

22. ... and Dems want Bush campaign to pay bill for the PA visit ...
Read about it on this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2024786

Bush's people DIDN'T do their homework. Lancaster County Republican bigwigs were complaining that Bush's people didn't contact them ahead of time for their advice about the visit ... Bush could have gotten so much more publicity at a bigger rally (Lancaster is SO Republican) ... but the Bush people KNEW BEST, and so they had these stupid behind-closed-doors meetings, and invitation-only meetings, and rolled through town on a bus (with all kinds of protesters out there, which they probably didn't expect).

Ha ha ha!

23. On this same campaign visit, Bush flipped bird (allegedly) to protester
So, God speaks through him (to the Amish) ... then when he sees some protesters

http://www.lancasteronline.com/pages/news/local/4/7449

... Bush allegedly flips the bird at teen protesters from the campaign bus (as featured on Al Franken's AAR show, etc.) ... here's the blog about that:
