Chiodo's may make way for new Walgreens (Homestead)

G'rrrrr - we don't need another frickin' Walgreens and Subway! They'll fail in that location! And for that they're going to rip out a Pittsburgh landmark! When NFL shows come to town they either go to Chiodo's or Primantis for local flavor.

Chiodo's Tavern, a Homestead landmark that made its reputation serving beers to tired steel workers but survived long after the giant plant across the tracks closed down, could be making way for a Walgreens drugstore.
A Cincinnati developer yesterday filed an application that details plans to put the national drugstore chain's second store in this area on West Eighth Avenue, near the base of the Homestead Grays Bridge.

Anchor Properties is seeking permission to demolish the existing Chiodo's Bar, a Subway restaurant and 76 gas station. A new Subway would be built, along with the drugstore and a parking area, according to paperwork submitted at the borough office.

"The redevelopment will be a major improvement to the business district," said a letter signed by Anchor's Michael S. Ricke. "A Walgreens drugstore is a solid neighborhood business providing goods and services to the Homestead community."

The demolition of Chiodo's, if the proposal is approved, would appear to put an end to a place that has become a symbol of Pittsburgh's past.

3. While I hate to lose Chiodo's...

...which is right at the other end of the bridge from me, I see this as a trend in Homestead and Munhall. With the new Hot Metal section going up, redevelopment here was inevitable, and actually may play a significant part in the revitalization of the Pittsburgh metro area.

Once things get rolling, look to the Mon South Shore between Station Square and Kennywood to become a major destination for the region.

The brighter side to this? The fact that something that size is going on on 8th Ave. means demand is increasing, which means there is money being made in Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall.

4. and if you have any spare cash now is the time to buy up some

of the old and beautiful homes...in fact real estate may be cheap enough to buy one nice house and the clunker next door to knock down for more yard space, a rental unit or a garage...

5. well...a look around shows that there aren't a lot of really

fancy homes on realtor.com...but that doesn't mean much as I have driven around that area and I have seen some little gems. However I did see a 4 unit apt bldg for 69,000...needs work but what doesn't...and who knows...

7. with real estate prices so high in squirrel hill and shady side

the next area to get a makeover is bound to be Homestead...but I agree it may take a while or it may never happen.

8. Since they are shutting down

the Homestead Grays Bridge to one lane in each direction for two years, then the Rankin bridge for the following two, 8th Ave will see on hell of a lot of other traffic. People will take the Hot Metal bridge and go through Homestead. I alread do that even though I am two short blocks from the Homestead Grays Bridge. Besides, it takes me past Big Jim's :evilgrin:
